Description

A compact IP20 drive with built-in filter, brake chopper and STO

The Danfoss VLT Midi Drive FC 280 is a general-purpose AC drive for conveyors, mixers, packaging machines, pumps, fans and compressors, covering 0.37 kW to 22 kW. Danfoss describes it as the evolution of the VLT 2800 and designs it so that harmonic mitigation, an EMC filter, dual-channel Safe Torque Off and a brake chopper are already inside the housing, which removes the cost and panel space of external parts.

Single-phase types use an active power factor correction stage that keeps harmonics below 8 percent THDi, while three-phase types use an integrated DC choke to stay below 48 percent. The same control algorithm drives induction and permanent magnet motors.

Installation, commissioning and communication

Frame sizes K1 to K5 are IP20 and can be mounted side by side or horizontally without derating, at ambient temperatures up to 45 C without derating. Pluggable terminals and an integrated USB port allow quick wiring and PC connection without a USB adapter driver. Set-up wizards cover common applications, and the VLT Memory Module lets a technician copy parameters or update firmware.

Modbus RTU and FC Protocol are standard. PROFINET, POWERLINK and EtherNet/IP with dual ports, PROFIBUS and CANopen are options, and an optional 24 V DC supply keeps the fieldbus alive when the mains is off. The fact sheet also describes an easy retrofit for existing VLT 2800 installations.

Selecting a frame and a type code

Pick the drive from the motor power at the supply voltage in use, then check the frame size for the panel. The table lists the enclosure dimensions printed in the Danfoss fact sheet; weights across the IP20 range run from 2.3 kg to 12.5 kg, and the fact sheet assigns each power size to its frame.

Frame Height A (mm) Width B (mm) Depth C (mm)
K1 210 75 168
K2 272.5 90 168
K3 272.5 115 168
K4 320 135 245
K5 410 150 245

Confirm before ordering: supply voltage and phases, rated motor current and overload, the fieldbus option, the control panel (numerical or graphical), safety needs, and the full ordering type code. For simpler duties see the Danfoss FC 51; for higher performance see the Danfoss FC 102; other drives are in the AC drives category.

How the Danfoss VLT Midi Drive FC 280 works

The drive turns the incoming mains supply into direct current and then builds a new output with the voltage and frequency the motor needs. The control algorithm sets the output so the motor holds the speed that was set. Changing the output frequency changes the motor speed.

About brand

From its headquarters in Nordborg, Denmark, where it was founded in 1933, Danfoss makes the drives, valves and sensors found in pump rooms, chiller plants and cold stores. Its blue VLT frequency converters are probably the most familiar of them.

Seven Star LLC lists Danfoss VLT drives, pressure transmitters, refrigeration valves and HVAC control valves, and supplies them to contractors and plant owners in Oman against the exact code number on the label.

Danfoss product families on this page

Among the VLT drives listed, three are each aimed at a different duty: the VLT HVAC Drive FC 102 for fans and building services, the VLT AQUA Drive FC 202 for water and wastewater pumping, and the VLT AutomationDrive FC 302 for general industrial machinery. The LCP 12 control panel with potentiometer (code number 132B0101) is also listed; Danfoss specifies it for the VLT Micro Drive FC 51. In pressure measurement there are the MBS 3000 general purpose transmitter and the MBS 5100. Valves include the AB-QM pressure independent control valve in DN 15 to DN 250, the EVR 25 servo-operated solenoid valve and the ICV pilot-operated valve for industrial refrigeration.

Where Danfoss equipment is used

District cooling and chilled water plants, air handling units, booster and irrigation pump stations, desalination and wastewater works, ammonia and CO2 refrigeration plants, food storage and marine engine rooms are the usual places. Demand in the GCC is driven largely by cooling and water.

Ordering Danfoss parts: what we need

Every Danfoss product has a code number, and drives also carry a long type code string on the label. Send both. For a drive we need the motor power and current, the mains voltage, enclosure rating, any fieldbus or option card and the filter class. For an MBS transmitter give the pressure span, output signal, pressure connection and electrical connection. For valves give the size, connection type, coil voltage where relevant and the refrigerant or medium.
