Cummins QSX15-G8 Diesel Generator Engine

Description

Overview

The Cummins QSX15-G8 is a 15 litre, six-cylinder G-Drive diesel engine for generator sets in the 350 to 560 kVA range at 50 Hz. Cummins describes the QSX15 series as the first heavy-duty diesel with single overhead camshaft technology, with around 30 percent fewer parts than comparable diesels and an integrated design that eliminates external lube, coolant and fuel lines for higher reliability. The engine is supplied complete with a Coolpac cooling package and air cleaner kit, and the 50 Hz sheet covered here is the TA Luft compliant version.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Cummins QSX15-G8 and its service parts to generator packagers, rental companies and facility operators in Oman and the GCC. For customers looking for Cummins engine spare parts in Oman, we also supply QSX15 filters and wear parts, from our office in Muscat.

Operating Principle

The Cummins QSX15-G8 is a four-cycle, in-line, turbocharged and charge air cooled diesel engine. A wastegated Holset HX82 turbocharger optimises operation across the torque curve and improves response, while the air-to-air charge cooler in the Coolpac lowers intake temperature before the air reaches the cylinders. A 24-valve cylinder head with four valves per cylinder improves breathing and gives faster response at every speed.

Fuel is delivered by the Cummins XPI system, which uses a high-capacity, single-cylinder pump that meets power needs while minimising space and total cost of ownership. Injection is direct and electronically controlled. As a general engineering note, combining a single overhead camshaft with an integrated block that carries fluids internally reduces the number of hoses, joints and seals that can leak or fail, which matters on generators that sit idle for long periods in hot, dusty conditions.

Engineering Design of the Cummins QSX15-G8

The Cummins QSX15-G8 has a 137 mm bore and 169 mm stroke for 15.0 litres of displacement. Filtration is by spin-on elements for both fuel, with a water separator, and lube oil. The sump takes 91 litres, the flywheel housing is SAE 1, and a 24 V starter works with a 30 A charging alternator. Cummins states that the Cummins QSX15-G8 is ideally suited to both open and containerised gensets, in static or portable equipment.

The integrated Coolpac uses 50 percent ethylene glycol and 50 percent water, holds 42 litres of coolant and is rated for a limiting ambient temperature of 55 degrees C, with a fan power of 16 kWm and an air flow of 11.8 cubic metres per second at 13 mm water restriction. The engine and Coolpac together measure 2326 mm long, 1349 mm wide and 1484 mm high, with a dry weight of 1620 kg. The engine is designed in ISO 9001 certified facilities and tested to meet EU product safety regulations.

Key Features

The Cummins QSX15-G8 offers these benefits to packagers and operators.

  • Single overhead camshaft design with around 30 percent fewer parts than comparable diesels, according to Cummins.
  • An integrated block replaces external hoses with internal fluid circuits to eliminate potential leaks.
  • The XPI fuel system uses a compact high-capacity pump to meet power needs at low ownership cost.
  • A wastegated Holset HX82 turbocharger improves response across the operating range.
  • Four valves per cylinder increase power and give faster response.
  • The factory-matched Coolpac is rated for 55 degrees C limiting ambient, valuable in GCC summers.
  • Standby, prime and continuous ratings cover typical outputs from 352 kVA to 561 kVA at 50 Hz.
  • The engine is TA Luft compliant on the sheet supplied with this page.

Industrial Applications

Generator sets with the Cummins QSX15-G8 are common in standby service for hospitals, hotels, residential towers, banks, telecom sites and light industry, and in prime service on construction projects, events and remote camps. Its compact Coolpac package fits standard canopies and containers, which makes it popular with rental fleets. The 55 degree C limiting ambient rating is a practical advantage in Oman, where enclosed generators can face very high inlet air temperatures in summer.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Cummins QSX15-G8 to customers in Muscat, Sohar, Duqm, Salalah and the wider GCC, and supports owners with filters, belts and other spares, backed by sourcing and model selection support in Muscat. Ratings Definitions

The Cummins sheet uses ISO 8528 language. Emergency standby (ESP) covers the length of a utility outage on a varying load; prime (PRP) allows a varying load with no limit on hours and offers a ten percent overload margin; continuous or base load (COP) is for a steady load around the clock. When sizing a set built on the Cummins QSX15-G8, the duty, motor starting requirements, altitude and enclosure air flow should all be reviewed, because derating can apply outside the reference conditions.

In containerised or canopied sets, the general rule is to keep the radiator discharge air from recirculating to the inlet, size louvres for the stated air flow and keep exhaust pipework short and well supported. These details often decide whether a generator can deliver its full rating during the hottest afternoons of the year.

About brand

Diesel power is the first thing associated with Cummins, founded in 1919 and headquartered in Columbus, Indiana, USA. The company builds engines, complete generator sets and the controls and components around them.

Seven Star LLC lists Cummins diesel generator sets, a generator-drive engine and engine and control spare parts, and supplies them to contractors and facility operators in Oman against the model, specification and part numbers on the equipment.

Cummins equipment on this page

The generator sets listed are the C150D5 at 150 kVA, the C275D5 at 275 kVA, a set in the 312/315 kVA class and the C1000D5B at 1000 kVA. In the Cummins naming, the number after C is the nominal kVA rating and D5 marks a diesel set for 50 Hz. The QSK60-G4 is a 16-cylinder engine for generator drive. Spare parts are listed by Cummins part number: head gasket set 4011502, starter motor 3283330, fuel injection pump 3937025 and the PowerCommand display and control assembly 300-6314-01. A generator controller page for auto mains failure duty is also listed.

Where Cummins generator sets are used

Standby power for hospitals, towers, data rooms and pumping stations; prime power on construction camps, remote oilfield sites and quarries; and paralleled sets for larger loads. High ambient temperature and dust are normal design conditions for sets working in the GCC, so cooling package and enclosure choices deserve attention at the inquiry stage.

Ordering Cummins parts: what we need

For engine parts send the engine serial number (ESN) and model from the engine dataplate, together with the part number if you have it. For generator set parts and controls send the genset model, specification letter and serial number from the set nameplate. For a complete set tell us the kVA rating and duty (standby or prime), voltage and frequency, open or enclosed build, the site ambient temperature and altitude, and the transfer switch or paralleling requirement.
