ASCO 8210G227 Fire Protection Solenoid Valve 1/2 in NPT
Overview
The ASCO 8210G227 is a 2-way, normally closed, pilot-operated solenoid valve from the ASCO Series 210 general service family, built with a brass body, 1/2 inch NPT ports and a 3/4 inch orifice. Within the Series 210 specification table it holds a distinctive position: it is the construction marked as UL listed for fire protection systems per UL 429A in the 120/60, 110/50 and 24 V DC versions, and it is rated for water service from 5 psi up to 300 psi on both AC and DC coils. That combination of a high water pressure rating, a compact 1/2 inch body and a fire protection listing is the reason the ASCO 8210G227 is specified on deluge, pre-action and water-mist release circuits.
Seven Star LLC supplies the ASCO 8210G227 to fire protection contractors, facility managers and maintenance teams across Oman and the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. Engineers in Muscat, Sohar, Duqm and Salalah who need a replacement for an installed release valve can send the full catalog number and voltage from the nameplate, and our team checks it against the manufacturer catalog before supply so the replacement matches the listed construction.
Operating Principle
The ASCO 8210G227 uses a pilot-operated diaphragm design, identified in the catalog as construction reference 5D. When the solenoid is de-energized, the core and plugnut hold a small pilot orifice closed, line pressure acts on top of the diaphragm and the main 3/4 inch orifice stays sealed. When the coil is energized, the core lifts, the pilot orifice vents the chamber above the diaphragm to the downstream side, and inlet pressure underneath pushes the diaphragm off the main seat. Water then flows through the full orifice with a flow factor (Cv) of 4, which corresponds to a Kv of 3.4 in the metric table.
Because the valve relies on line pressure to lift the diaphragm, it needs a minimum operating pressure differential of 5 psi (0.3 bar) to open and stay fully open. In practice this suits fire protection water headers, which are always pressurized by jockey pumps or elevated tanks, but it means the ASCO 8210G227 is not a choice for gravity drain lines with near-zero differential. Closing is fail-safe: when power is removed, the spring and core reseat the pilot, pressure equalizes over the diaphragm and the valve shuts.
Engineering Design of the ASCO 8210G227
The ASCO 8210G227 body is brass, with NBR or PTFE seals and discs, a PA disc holder, a 305 stainless steel core tube, 430F stainless steel core and plugnut and 302 stainless steel springs. The AC coil is rated 17.1 W, class F insulation, while the DC coil is rated 40.6 W, class H insulation, which explains the higher maximum fluid temperature on AC service (130 °F, 54 °C) than on DC service (90 °F, 32 °C). The catalog gives this construction its own nominal ambient range: 32 to 130 °F (0 to 54 °C) for AC and 32 to 90 °F (0 to 32 °C) for DC.
The standard solenoid enclosure across Series 210 is the RedHat II watertight enclosure, Types 1, 2, 3, 3S, 4 and 4X. For the ASCO 8210G227 specifically, the catalog note states that no prefix and voltage options are offered beyond the listed fire protection voltages, so buyers should order 120/60, 110/50 or 24 V DC exactly as shown rather than expecting the wider prefix menu available on general service siblings. Valves may be mounted in any position unless the specification table states otherwise.
Key Features
The ASCO 8210G227 brings the following characteristics to a fire protection release or water shut-off circuit:
- UL listed for fire protection systems per UL 429A in 120/60, 110/50 and 24 V DC versions, as marked in the Series 210 table.
- Water pressure rating of 5 to 300 psi (0.3 to 21 bar) on both AC and DC solenoids, matching the highest water rating listed anywhere in the normally closed Series 210 table.
- Normally closed, so the valve opens only when the release panel energizes the coil and closes again when power is removed.
- Pilot-operated diaphragm construction giving a Cv of 4 through a 3/4 inch orifice in a compact 1/2 inch NPT body.
- Brass body with stainless steel core tube, core, plugnut and springs for long service in treated and untreated fire water.
- 17.1 W class F AC coil or 40.6 W class H DC coil, with standard voltages chosen to match common fire alarm panel outputs.
- RedHat II watertight solenoid enclosure rated Types 1, 2, 3, 3S, 4 and 4X for plant rooms and outdoor skids.
- CSA certification across the series and RedHat II compliance with applicable CE directives, per the catalog approvals section.
Industrial Applications
The most common home for the ASCO 8210G227 in Oman is the solenoid release trim of deluge and pre-action valve sets that protect transformer bays at power and desalination plants, loading racks at fuel terminals, and warehouses in the Sohar and Salalah free zones. In general practice for such systems, the fire alarm and release panel energizes the ASCO 8210G227 to vent the priming chamber of the main deluge valve, and the 300 psi water rating gives margin above typical fire main pressures. The same valve is used on water-mist and foam-proportioning skids where a compact, normally closed release element is needed.
Facility teams in hospitals, malls and hotel complexes across Muscat also stock the ASCO 8210G227 as a spare for pre-action systems protecting server rooms and archives. Seven Star LLC supplies the valve together with related ASCO products such as the ASCO 8210 series general service solenoid valve, the ASCO 327 series solenoid valve for pilot duty, and the ASCO 551 NAMUR pilot solenoid valve for actuated valve packages, so maintenance stores can be built around one family of spares.

ASCO solenoid valve series listed here
Three series are listed. The ASCO 8210 series is a two-way, pilot-operated general service valve for air, water and light oil. The ASCO 327 series is a direct-operated three-way valve widely used to pilot the actuators of process valves, including shutdown valves. The ASCO 551 series is a pilot-operated spool valve with a NAMUR interface that mounts directly on quarter-turn pneumatic actuators.Ordering ASCO valves: what we need
Send the complete catalog number from the nameplate, including prefix and suffix letters, since these define the solenoid enclosure, coil and seal options. Add the coil voltage and frequency, pipe size and thread, body material, the fluid, the minimum and maximum operating pressure differential, and whether the valve is normally closed, normally open or universal. For hazardous areas, state the protection type required. Buyers in the GCC often add ambient temperature, which affects coil selection.Browse ASCO products by category: Solenoid Valve.
