SEL-487E Transformer Protection Relay
Description
Overview
The SEL-487E Transformer Protection Relay is the SEL-400 series three-phase transformer protection, automation and control system from Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories. It is intended for large power transformers, autotransformers and multi-breaker substation arrangements, accepting as many as seven three-phase restraint current inputs and providing a second differential zone that can be applied to busbar protection. The current SEL-487E-3 and SEL-487E-4 versions combine differential, restricted earth fault, turn-to-turn fault, distance, overcurrent and breaker failure protection with substation automation and synchrophasor functions.
Seven Star LLC supplies the SEL-487E to transmission and generation utilities, independent power producers and large industrial users in Oman and the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. Typical applications are grid transformers at 400/220/132 kV substations, generator step-up transformers and transformers fed through breaker-and-a-half or ring-bus schemes, where each breaker current must be measured separately.
Protection Principle
The differential element compares currents from every terminal connected to the transformer after compensating for CT ratio, vector group and zero-sequence current. Its two-stage slope adapts automatically to external fault conditions, so the relay remains secure when CTs saturate or waveforms are heavily distorted while staying fast and sensitive for internal faults. The relay can accommodate CT ratio mismatch as large as 35:1, and each three-phase input can be set for 1 A or 5 A nominal secondary current.
Energization and overexcitation are handled by combined harmonic blocking and restraint based on second-, fourth- and fifth-harmonic content, supplemented by waveshape-based inrush detection for inrush currents with low second- and fourth-harmonic content. Negative-sequence differential elements detect turn-to-turn winding faults involving as little as two percent of a winding, which a phase differential element cannot see. Three independent restricted earth fault elements protect grounded-wye windings close to the neutral, and volts-per-hertz elements protect the core from overexcitation.
Engineering Design of the SEL-487E
With two ac input cards, the SEL-487E supports seven three-phase current terminals (S, T, U, W, X, Y and Z) and two three-phase voltage terminals, with Terminal Z orderable as either a current or voltage terminal. A single ac input card provides three current terminals and one voltage terminal. Analog channels are sampled at 8 kHz, and protection runs eight times per power system cycle. Chassis sizes from 4U upward allow additional I/O interface boards, and remote I/O modules such as the SEL-2505 and SEL-2506 or the SEL-2600 RTD module extend I/O and temperature measurement where needed.
Beyond transformer zones, the relay offers four zones of phase and ground distance protection with mho or quadrilateral characteristics, adaptive time-overcurrent elements per terminal, high-speed breaker failure with open-pole detection in less than one cycle, synchronism check and three-pole reclosing for as many as seven breakers. An IEC 60255-149 compliant thermal model, used with an RTD module, can alarm or trip when equipment overheats. Six independent settings groups allow different settings for maintenance, seasonal loading or source changes.
Key Features
Utilities select the SEL-487E for the following functions:
- Transformer differential protection with as many as seven restraint inputs and an adaptive two-stage slope for CT saturation security.
- A second three-phase differential zone that can be used for busbar protection.
- Harmonic blocking, harmonic restraint and waveshape-based inrush detection for secure transformer energization.
- Negative-sequence differential elements that detect turn-to-turn faults down to two percent of the winding.
- Three independent restricted earth fault elements and volts-per-hertz protection for overexcitation.
- Combined overcurrent elements that sum two terminal currents for ring-bus and breaker-and-a-half connections.
- Distance protection, fault location for each current terminal and directional real and reactive power elements against reverse power flow.
- Sequential Events Recorder with 1,000 entries and oscillography sampled at up to 8 kHz with COMTRADE event reports.
Automation and Communications
An optional Ethernet card gives access to IEC 61850 MMS and GOOSE messaging, DNP3 and FTP, with PRP for seamless network redundancy and IEEE 1588 PTP for high-accuracy timing. Serial ports support SEL ASCII, SEL Fast Message, MIRRORED BITS and DNP3, and synchrophasor data are streamed in IEEE C37.118 format. As many as 1,000 lines of SELOGIC automation logic, local and remote control points and breaker and battery monitoring allow the relay to perform bay control functions, while digitally signed firmware upgrades help confirm firmware authenticity.
Industrial Applications
In Oman, the SEL-487E suits grid substations on the main interconnected transmission system, generator step-up transformers at gas-fired and renewable power plants, and large supply transformers feeding aluminium, steel, refining and petrochemical complexes in Sohar, Duqm and Salalah. Its –40 to +85 °C operating temperature range supports installation in substations across the interior, and the ability to measure each breaker separately suits the breaker-and-a-half layouts used at higher voltages.
Engineers also apply the SEL-487E to autotransformers and to combined transformer and short busbar zones, reducing the number of relays per bay. Seven Star LLC can help select between the -3 and -4 versions, chassis size, current terminal arrangement and protocol set, and supply related SEL relays for line and feeder protection in the same substation.
Related SEL relays include the SEL-411L line differential protection relay and SEL-787 transformer protection relay.

About brand
Protection engineers know Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories simply as SEL. The company has made digital protective relays in Pullman, USA, since 1982, and its relays guard feeders, motors, transformers and generators in utilities and industrial plants. Seven Star LLC lists the SEL-751 feeder relay, SEL-710-5 motor relay and SEL-787 transformer relay, and sources SEL relays for electrical teams in Oman and the GCC.
SEL-700 series relays on the site
The SEL-751 protects radial and looped distribution feeders with overcurrent, directional, voltage and frequency elements, autoreclosing and breaker failure logic. It can be ordered with arc-flash detection inputs and a touchscreen. Protocol options include IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus and EtherNet/IP. The SEL-710-5 covers motor protection and the SEL-787 transformer differential protection in the same hardware family.
Ordering SEL relays: what we need
An SEL relay is defined by its full part number, a long string that fixes the power supply voltage, CT secondary rating (1 A or 5 A), I/O cards in each slot, communication ports, protocols and display. Send that string from the nameplate or from your specification. A model name alone is not enough.
