Kamstrup flowIQ 4200 Ultrasonic Bulk Water Meter DN125-DN300

Description

Overview

The Kamstrup flowIQ 4200 is a large-diameter ultrasonic water meter for district metering and bulk supply points. It is built around a stainless steel flow body with four ultrasonic sensors and covers sizes DN125 to DN300, with nominal flow Q3 from 160 to 1000 m³/h. The electronics are hermetically sealed, the meter is approved for drinking water, and volume is measured every second, which gives a utility a dependable reference reading at the points where water enters a supply zone or leaves a reservoir.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Kamstrup flowIQ 4200 to water authorities, contractors and industrial users across Oman and the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. Bulk meters sit at the top of the water balance: when a zone inlet is measured accurately, the gap between supplied and billed volume becomes visible, and loss reduction work can be targeted at the zones that need it most.

Measurement Principle

Each pair of ultrasonic sensors sends sound pulses diagonally across the pipe, alternately with and against the flow. The difference in travel time between the two directions is proportional to the mean velocity along that path. With four sensors, the Kamstrup flowIQ 4200 samples the velocity profile along more than one path, which helps it handle the flow profiles found in real pipework. The calculated velocity is multiplied by the cross-section to give flow rate and totalised volume.

Because the measurement is static, there is nothing in the bore to wear or jam, the pressure loss at Q3 stays between 0.11 and 0.19 bar, and accuracy does not drift as mechanical parts age. The meter is approved to MID with accuracy class 2 to OIML R 49, with dynamic range R250 as standard and R630 available for selected markets, where the meter must be installed horizontally.

Engineering Design of the Kamstrup flowIQ 4200

The flow part is stainless steel W.no. 1.4408 (316), transducer pockets are PPS and seals are EPDM. The meter ships with separate split flanges in cast iron EN-GJS-500-7C with a black FBE coating, drilled to EN 1092-1 PN16, which simplifies alignment during installation. Overall installation lengths run from 250 mm for DN125 to 500 mm for DN300, and total weight ranges from 19 kg to 84 kg including flanges. The enclosure is IP68 and IK08, so the Kamstrup flowIQ 4200 can be mounted in meter chambers, pumping stations and well heads that are exposed to water.

The Kamstrup flowIQ 4200 is powered by two replaceable 3.65 V lithium D-cells with a lifetime of up to 20 years, depending on data package and temperature. A wired serial interface on the front, routed through the glass without affecting the IP68 rating, connects to the flowIQ Gateway. The gateway synchronises every 20 seconds, or every 4 seconds in fast transmission mode, and can supply the meter with external power so the batteries are not drawn on at all.

Key Features

The Kamstrup flowIQ 4200 brings smart-meter diagnostics to the large pipe sizes that matter most for water balance:

  • Four ultrasonic sensors in a stainless steel body, with volume measured every second.
  • Five sizes from DN125 to DN300 and nominal flows of 160, 250, 400, 630 and 1000 m³/h, all rated PN16.
  • Low pressure loss of 0.11 to 0.19 bar at Q3, which reduces pumping cost on transfer mains.
  • Info codes for tampering, empty pipe, reverse flow and low battery, plus logging of flow above the legal range to check sizing.
  • Ambient temperature measurement with configurable high and low alarm limits.
  • Data loggers holding 20 years of yearly values, 36 months, 460 days and 2400 hours of history, plus the last 50 info code changes.
  • Integrated Wireless M-Bus (C1, T1-BSI/OMS, AES-128) or linkIQ radio, active in parallel with the wired interface.
  • Replaceable D-cell battery pack and optional external power from the flowIQ Gateway.

Industrial Applications

Utilities use the Kamstrup flowIQ 4200 at district metered area inlets, on reservoir and tank outlets, at booster pumping stations and on transfer mains from treatment or desalination plants. In Oman, where much of the potable supply is produced by desalination and pumped over long distances, an accurate bulk reading at each transfer point is the basis for any non-revenue water programme. The current flow and reverse flow display of the Kamstrup flowIQ 4200 also helps operators confirm flow direction in networks that are fed from more than one source.

Industrial and commercial users in the Sohar and Salalah free zones, hospital campuses, airports and large residential developments install the Kamstrup flowIQ 4200 on the incoming main to reconcile utility bills and to monitor internal consumption against the supply contract. Seven Star LLC supplies the meter with the Kamstrup data sheet and helps engineers select size, dynamic range and gateway configuration for the site. As with the smaller meters, the data sheet notes the meter should not be mounted in direct prolonged sunlight, so above-ground installations should be shaded.

Ordering Kamstrup meters: what we need

Send the type number from the meter front if you are matching installed units. Otherwise give nominal flow and pipe size, connection type and meter length, heat or cooling service, where the flow sensor sits (supply or return pipe), the temperature sensor type and cable length, and the communication you need, for example wired M-Bus or a radio option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the Kamstrup flowIQ 4200 typically installed?
Kamstrup designed the flowIQ 4200 for potable water in distribution networks, commercial premises and industrial sites. It suits district metered area inlets, reservoir and pumping station outlets, well heads and bulk supply points, and its IP68 rating allows installation in chambers that may flood.
What pressure loss does the Kamstrup flowIQ 4200 introduce at nominal flow?
The data sheet lists a pressure loss at Q3 between 0.11 and 0.19 bar, depending on size. There is no turbine or mechanical register in the flow path, which keeps head loss low compared with many mechanical bulk meters and saves pumping energy on large transfer mains.
