Brand:

Kamstrup ULTRAFLOW 54 DN150-300 Large Ultrasonic Flow Sensor

Description

A stainless steel ultrasonic sensor for large heat and cooling circuits

The Kamstrup ULTRAFLOW 54 DN150-300 is a static flow sensor for qp 150 to 1000 m³/h, designed for heat and cooling installations where water is the energy carrier. It measures with bidirectional ultrasonic transit time, has no moving parts, and keeps all measuring and calculating circuits on a single board. Compared with the smaller version it has a stainless steel body with titanium transducers, a 1 second sampling interval, and a configurable meter factor and pulse duration. It is used primarily as a sub-assembly with a separate MULTICAL 603 or MULTICAL 803 calculator and TemperatureSensor 63 and 83, and it is approved as both a heat meter (MID) and, per the datasheet, a cooling meter in Denmark.

Type numbers for separate sensors

When supplied as a separate flow sensor, the type number is 65-5-xxxx-YZ-XXX, where Y is the output module (1 galvanically coupled, 2 galvanically separated, 3 low power separated), Z is the supply module (0 none, 2 battery, 7 230 VAC, 8 24 VAC) and XXX is assigned by Kamstrup for final assembly and approvals. A galvanically separated module is used with cables above 10 m, as flow sensor no. 2 where equipotential bonding is not possible, with foreign calculators, or to cure disturbed signals. Flow information cannot be read when a galvanically separated module is used.

Installation and selection notes

The electronics box can be separated from the flow sensor with the enclosed bracket, which is recommended for hot or cold media. For smaller sizes, qp 0.6 to 100 m³/h, see the ULTRAFLOW 54 DN15-125 sensor. Related Kamstrup meters on this site include the Kamstrup flowIQ 4200 for bulk water and the MULTICAL 603 calculator; see all Flowmeters.

Selecting the right qp and diameter

Size the sensor to the flow the circuit really carries, not only to the pipe diameter. With qp values of 150, 250, 400, 600 and 1000 m3/h across DN150 to DN300, several sizes share a pipe diameter, as the type number table shows. Take the design flow of the heating or chilled-water circuit and choose a qp that keeps normal operation well inside the 100:1 dynamic range, while leaving headroom for peak flow up to qs. Check the pressure stage against the system: DN150 to DN250 are PN25, and DN300 is PN16. Confirm the medium temperature is within 2 to 150 C, and note that the sensor is for water as energy carrier.

Installation and commissioning steps

  • Install the sensor following the Kamstrup installation guidance, with the correct flow direction and the pipe fully filled with water.
  • For chilled-water and hot media, separate the electronics box from the sensor using the enclosed bracket as recommended, so the electronics are not exposed to condensation or heat.
  • Choose the output and supply modules to suit the MULTICAL calculator, the cable length and the power available on site.
  • Route the pulse cable away from power cables, and use a galvanically separated module where cable length or bonding conditions require it.
  • After filling and venting the line, compare the flow reading on the calculator with the expected plant flow before handing over.

Operation in GCC district cooling and utility plants

Large energy metering in Oman and the Gulf is often on chilled-water systems for district cooling, hotels, malls and industrial sites. Cooling service brings condensation risk, so the separation of the electronics box and the IP67 protection both matter. Plant rooms can be hot and dusty, and outdoor meter chambers may collect water; keep the electronics box mounted where it can be read and inspected, keep cable entries closed, and check the reading against the calculator during routine rounds. Because the sensor has no moving parts, maintenance is mainly about the installation: water quality, venting of air, and the condition of the cable and connections.

What to include in your RFQ

State the pipe diameter and flange pressure stage, the required qp, the medium (heating or cooling water) and its temperature range, and the MULTICAL 603 or MULTICAL 803 calculator the sensor will be paired with. Add the pulse cable length, the supply option (from the calculator, mains, 24 VAC or battery), and any approval required for billing.

If the sensor replaces an existing meter, include the type number from its label and the overall length available between the flanges, since the DN250 version is 600 mm long while the other diameters are 500 mm. Mention whether a second flow sensor is planned on the same calculator, as this affects the choice of output module.

About brand

Ultrasonic measurement with no moving parts is the idea behind the flowIQ water meters and ultrasonic energy meters of Kamstrup. The Danish company, founded in 1946 in Skanderborg, makes meters for water, heat and cooling that are read remotely. Seven Star LLC lists the Kamstrup flowIQ water meters and the MULTICAL 403 energy meter, and supplies Kamstrup meters to utilities, district cooling operators and building owners in Oman and the GCC.

Kamstrup meter families on this page

The flowIQ 2200 is an ultrasonic smart water meter for residential, multi-unit and commercial connections. The flowIQ 4200 is the bulk water meter, made in five sizes from DN125 to DN300. The MULTICAL 403 is an ultrasonic thermal energy meter that can be supplied as a heat meter, a cooling meter or a combined heat and cooling meter, with a matched pair of temperature sensors and communication modules.

Ordering Kamstrup meters: what we need

Send the type number from the meter front if you are matching installed units. Otherwise give nominal flow and pipe size, connection type and meter length, heat or cooling service, where the flow sensor sits (supply or return pipe), the temperature sensor type and cable length, and the communication you need, for example wired M-Bus or a radio option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which pipe sizes and flows does it cover?
DN150, DN200, DN250 and DN300 with nominal flow qp of 150, 250, 400, 600 and 1000 m3/h depending on the diameter, all with 100:1 dynamic range and qs:qp of 2:1.
What medium temperatures are permitted?
2 to 150 °C or a narrower range. Above 90 °C, or below ambient temperature, the electronics box must be mounted on the enclosed bracket instead of on the flow sensor.
How is it powered and connected?
With the galvanically coupled output module it is powered by the MULTICAL calculator over a three-wire cable up to 10 m, or up to 30 m with a Cable Extender Box. Galvanically separated modules use 230 VAC, 24 VAC or a D-cell battery and allow up to 100 m to the calculator.
Can the pulse value be changed?
Yes. The datasheet describes programmable meter factors and pulse durations, and the default is shown on the ULTRAFLOW label. Configuration can be factory set or changed on site.
Is Seven Star LLC a distributor of Kamstrup?
No. Seven Star LLC is an independent industrial supplier in Muscat and is not a distributor or agent of Kamstrup. We check the type number against Kamstrup documentation before quoting.
