Kamstrup flowIQ 2200 Ultrasonic Smart Water Meter

Description

Overview

The Kamstrup flowIQ 2200 is a static ultrasonic smart water meter for residential and light commercial service connections. It has no impeller, gears or magnetic coupling, so the measuring element does not wear and is less sensitive to impurities than a mechanical meter. The low minimum cut-off flow, down to 0.9 L/h on the smallest sizes, lets the meter register very small draw-offs such as a dripping tap, which is exactly the consumption that slips past older meters and ends up as non-revenue water. The series is offered in composite bodies (types KWM2231 and KWM2230) and in a stainless steel body (type KWM3230), covering nominal flows Q3 from 1.6 to 10 m³/h.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Kamstrup flowIQ 2200 to water utilities, master developers, property managers and contractors across Oman and the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. Typical projects range from villa compounds and apartment towers to hotels, schools and government housing, where accurate billing and early leak alarms matter in a region where every cubic metre of treated water carries a real production cost.

Measurement Principle

The Kamstrup flowIQ 2200 measures flow by sending ultrasonic signals through the measuring pipe in both directions. A signal travelling with the flow arrives slightly earlier than one travelling against it, and the electronics convert this transit-time difference into flow velocity and then into volume. Stainless steel reflectors guide the sound path along the measuring pipe, and the calculation runs continuously from the battery supply. Because the volume reading is derived from time measurement rather than from a rotating part, the metrology stays stable over the life of the meter.

The practical result is a Kamstrup flowIQ 2200 with accuracy class 2 to OIML R 49, approved under the Measuring Instruments Directive, and a dynamic range that the data sheet lists from R100 up to R400 for individual sizes, with the series approved for up to R1600. There is no start-up threshold caused by friction, no pressure loss from a turbine and no risk of a register sticking after a period of no consumption.

Engineering Design of the Kamstrup flowIQ 2200

Composite versions use a flow part of PPS with 40 % fibreglass reinforcement, while the KWM3230 uses stainless steel W.no. 1.4408. Reflectors are 316/316L stainless steel, gaskets are EPDM and the strainer is made of PES and PPO. All wetted parts are approved for drinking water under KIWA, KTW-BWGL and ACS, and meters leave the factory disinfected, dried and packed in airtight packaging. The enclosure is rated IP68 for installation in flooded meter pits, and the KWM2230 and KWM3230 reach impact class IK08.

The Kamstrup flowIQ 2200 is powered by 3.65 V lithium cells: two A-cells in the KWM2231 for up to 16 years, or one D-cell in the KWM2230 and KWM3230 for up to 20 years, depending on the data package and installation temperature. The large display shows totalised volume, current flow and info code symbols. A permanent memory stores yearly, monthly, daily and hourly loggers with depths of 20 years, 36 months, 460 days and 2400 hours, read through the optical eye.

Key Features

The Kamstrup flowIQ 2200 combines billing accuracy with network diagnostics in a single battery-powered device:

  • Integrated Acoustic Leak Detection logs a daily noise value from the pipes around the meter, so the installed meter base works like a network of noise loggers (cold water versions).
  • Info codes flag leak, burst, tamper, dry pipe and reverse flow conditions, and clear themselves once the condition disappears.
  • Integrated radio options include Wireless M-Bus C1/C2/T1 with AES-128 encryption, the multi-channel linkIQ protocol, LoRaWAN and NB-IoT, depending on variant and country code.
  • Wireless M-Bus transmits every 16 seconds for drive-by reading or every 96 seconds for a fixed network.
  • Meters with the wired interface connect to the flowIQ Gateway or can deliver volume pulses of 1, 10, 100 or 1000 L per pulse.
  • Water and ambient temperature measurement warns of unusual conditions such as freezing or hot meter boxes.
  • Consumption profiles and logging of flow above the legal range help confirm whether the installed meter size is correct.
  • Battery life of up to 20 years with transport mode, so the radio switches on automatically after the first litre passes.

Industrial Applications

For water distribution companies, the Kamstrup flowIQ 2200 turns every customer connection into a data point. Night flow patterns, acoustic values and leak codes reveal losses on service pipes long before they appear on a monthly bill, and remote reading removes the cost and access problems of manual rounds in gated compounds. In Muscat, Sohar, Salalah and the growing residential districts around them, the meter suits new connection programmes, smart-meter retrofits and pilot zones where non-revenue water needs to be quantified before a wider rollout.

Building owners use the Kamstrup flowIQ 2200 for tenant sub-metering in apartment towers, labour accommodation, hospitals and hotel complexes, where a burst alarm can save a flooded basement and a leak code can identify a running cistern in a single unit. Seven Star LLC supplies the Kamstrup flowIQ 2200 together with sizing advice and the official documentation, and can match the radio option to the network the utility or facility already operates. Note that the ambient rating of the Kamstrup flowIQ 2200 is 2 to 55 °C and the data sheet advises against mounting in direct, prolonged sunlight, so meter boxes in the Gulf summer should be shaded.

Ordering Kamstrup meters: what we need

Send the type number from the meter front if you are matching installed units. Otherwise give nominal flow and pipe size, connection type and meter length, heat or cooling service, where the flow sensor sits (supply or return pipe), the temperature sensor type and cable length, and the communication you need, for example wired M-Bus or a radio option.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Kamstrup flowIQ 2200 detect leaks on a service connection?
The meter raises a leak info code when water has not been stagnant for one continuous hour during the last 24 hours, and a burst code when consumption stays very high for half an hour. On cold water versions it also logs a daily acoustic noise value from the surrounding pipes, which helps a utility find leaks without separate noise loggers.
Can the Kamstrup flowIQ 2200 be read remotely in Oman?
Yes. Depending on the variant, the meter has integrated Wireless M-Bus (C1/C2/T1 with AES-128 encryption), linkIQ, LoRaWAN or NB-IoT radio. The right choice depends on the network available at the site, for example a drive-by Wireless M-Bus route for a residential compound or an NB-IoT operator network for scattered connections.
Which pipe sizes and flow rates does the Kamstrup flowIQ 2200 cover?
Composite versions cover Q3 1.6, 2.5 and 4.0 m³/h with G¾B and G1B threads, while the stainless steel KWM3230 version covers Q3 2.5 to 10 m³/h with G1B and G1¼B threads. All versions are PN16 with ISO 228-1 connections, and the data sheet lists the installation length for each size.
Can the flowIQ 2200 feed pulses to an existing BMS or data logger?
Meters ordered with the wired interface (KWM2230 and KWM3230) can be switched from serial communication to a volume pulse output with METERTOOL, using pulse values of 1, 10, 100 or 1000 litres per pulse. The same interface also connects to the flowIQ Gateway for plug-in communication modules.
