Crosby JBS-E Balanced Bellows Pressure Relief Valve
Description
Overview
The Crosby JBS-E is the balanced bellows pressure relief valve of the Crosby J-Series. It follows the same full nozzle direct spring architecture as the conventional JOS-E but adds a metal bellows that is balanced to minimize the effect of variable back pressure on set pressure, and that allows the valve to work in applications with high built-up back pressure. This makes the Crosby JBS-E the usual choice when several relief valves discharge into a common flare or closed relief header, where the pressure downstream of each valve changes with the loading of the system.
The bellows has a second job: it isolates the guide, spindle, spring and other parts in the bonnet chamber from the process fluid. On corrosive, viscous or slurry media that could otherwise foul the spring side of a conventional valve, the Crosby JBS-E keeps those parts clean and functional. Seven Star LLC supplies the Crosby JBS-E and its JBSBP-E balancing piston variant to refinery, gas processing and petrochemical operators in Oman and the GCC, with technical support from Muscat for sizing review, material selection and spare bellows assemblies.
Balanced Bellows Principle
In a conventional spring-loaded valve, pressure in the discharge system acts on the back of the disc and adds to the spring force, so the valve opens later than the nameplate set pressure when back pressure is present. The bellows of the Crosby JBS-E has an effective area equal to the seat area, and the bonnet is vented to atmosphere, so back pressure acts on equal and opposite areas and cancels out. The result is a set pressure that stays close to its calibrated value even when the header pressure rises and falls, and a valve that can still lift reliably when built-up back pressure is high.
Because the bellows is a pressure-containing flexible element, the bonnet vent must remain open and unobstructed, and it also serves as a tell-tale if the bellows ruptures. The JBSBP-E extension adds a supplementary back pressure balancing piston that was developed with engineers from a leading petroleum company. If the bellows fails, the piston keeps the balancing effect in place so the valve continues to perform essentially as it did with the bellows intact, which the catalog describes as double protection until the bellows can be replaced.
Engineering Design of the Crosby JBS-E
A standard Crosby JBS-E uses a bellows and top flange made from Inconel alloy 625, chosen for its fatigue resistance and its resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion and inter-granular attack, which is better than 316L stainless steel. The bellows tailpiece is 316L, the nozzle, disc insert and nozzle ring are 316 stainless steel, and the body and bonnet are ASME SA216 WCB or WCC carbon steel, with SA217 WC6 for the 801 to 1000 degF band. The bellows assembly threads onto the disc holder with a tailpiece and gasket, and a welded bellows attachment is available as an option.
On the JBSBP-E the guiding clearances of the balancing piston are held to a minimum and grooves in the piston form a labyrinth seal, which limits leakage to atmosphere if the bellows fails. Bellows leak detection uses a Rosemount 2051T or 3051T in-line pressure transmitter, wired 4-20 mA HART or wireless, plumbed into the adapter that sees the chamber between the piston and the bellows. Pressure building in that chamber triggers an instant, time-stamped notification, and the catalog quotes detection of a rupture down to 0.0009 square inch at 1 psig and a reduction of more than 90 percent in emissions through the bonnet vent. Upgrade kits allow existing J-Series valves to be retrofitted.
Key Features
The Crosby JBS-E adds back pressure compensation and process isolation to the proven J-Series platform:
- Balanced Inconel 625 bellows that minimizes the effect of variable back pressure on set pressure.
- Isolation of the spring, guide and spindle from corrosive, viscous or slurry media.
- Set pressure range of 25 to 6000 psig for the Crosby JBS-E, JBSBP-E and the JLT liquid trim versions.
- Sizes from 1 D 2 to 12 W 16 inch in ANSI classes and 25 D 50 to 200 T 250 in EN type with ratings up to ANSI Class 2500.
- JBSBP-E balancing piston for continued balanced operation if the bellows fails.
- Optional wired or wireless Rosemount bellows leak detection with volumetric emissions calculation.
- NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 Level 1 and Level 2 sour gas material options.
- Variants include JBS-E-RL restricted lift and JBS-E-B block body valves for high pressure, small orifice duty.
Industrial Applications
The Crosby JBS-E is specified on flare header service, closed relief systems and vapor recovery manifolds in refineries, gas plants and LNG related facilities, where simultaneous relief events and header loading produce variable superimposed back pressure. It is also used on corrosive chemical duty, on amine and sour service with the NACE material options, and on process fluids prone to polymerisation or coking that would foul a conventional spring chamber. Operators in the Sohar and Duqm industrial zones and in Salalah port facilities can rely on the bellows to protect the valve internals while the leak detection option supports modern fugitive emissions programmes.
During plant turnarounds, a retrofit from conventional to balanced construction is a common request, and Seven Star LLC helps customers check whether a JOS-E can be converted with a bellows kit or whether the valve should be replaced outright. Teams reviewing relief philosophy may also compare the Crosby JBS-E with the LESER Critical Service Series safety valves, the LESER High Pressure Series or the Anderson Greenwood Series 90/9000 pilot-operated relief valve, and our engineers can supply a neutral comparison of capacity, back pressure tolerance and maintenance intervals.

About brand
Refineries and gas plants have specified Crosby pressure relief valves for generations; the name goes back to 1874. The valves protect vessels, piping and heat exchangers against overpressure. Seven Star LLC lists the Crosby JOS-E conventional valve, the JBS-E actuated bellows valve and the OMNI-TRIM Series 900 and BP, and sources Crosby relief valves and spare parts for operators in Oman and the GCC.
Crosby product families
The J-Series is the direct spring flanged line, with one design for air, gas, steam, vapor, liquid and two-phase service. JOS-E is the conventional style and JBS-E the balanced bellows style for variable back pressure. The manufacturer publishes ASME Section VIII and XIII certified capacities and API 526 and 527 compliance for the series. OMNI-TRIM valves are the compact threaded and small-flanged type for thermal relief and small flows.

Frequently Asked Questions
The Inconel 625 bellows balances the valve against variable back pressure so that set pressure stays stable, and it isolates the guide, spindle and spring from the process fluid. It also allows operation with high built-up back pressure.
The JBSBP-E adds a supplementary back pressure balancing piston. If the bellows ruptures, the piston maintains balanced operation until the bellows is replaced, and it enables optional pressure-transmitter based bellows leak detection.
A Rosemount in-line pressure transmitter, wired or wireless, monitors the chamber between the balancing piston and the bellows. A rise in that pressure indicates bellows failure and is reported immediately with a time stamp.
Yes. The catalog describes NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 Level 1 and Level 2 options for the Crosby JBS-E series, and notes that the purchaser must confirm that the materials meet the requirements of the application.
