Trafag EXNA 8854 Ex Pressure Transmitter
Description
Wide-temperature intrinsically safe transmitter for Zone 0 gas and Zone 20 dust
The Trafag EXNA 8854 is an intrinsically safe piezoresistive pressure transmitter with a 4 to 20 mA output, certified to ATEX and IECEx for gas Zones 0, 1 and 2, dust Zones 20, 21 and 22 and underground mining. It carries a DNV-GL approval and can be configured for ranges from 0.1 to 1000 bar, in relative or absolute versions.
Compared with the older EXNA 8852/8853 types, the datasheet for the 8854 lists a lower media and ambient limit of minus 40 degrees C and a higher vibration and shock rating. That makes it a candidate for cold-climate and offshore installations, and for pump skids where vibration is a concern. The body, sensor and pressure connection are 316L stainless steel, with a titanium option for corrosive media.

Pressure ranges and overpressure ratings
The type code selects one of 21 standard ranges. A few examples from the datasheet are listed below, and customised ranges can be requested.
| Range [bar] | Overpressure [bar] | Burst pressure [bar] |
|---|---|---|
| 0 … 0.1 | 3 | 200 |
| 0 … 1 | 3 | 200 |
| 0 … 10 | 30 | 200 |
| 0 … 25 | 75 | 200 |
| 0 … 100 | 300 | 850 |
| 0 … 250 | 750 | 850 |
| 0 … 600 | 850 | 1500 |
| 0 … 1000 | 1500 | 1500 |
For ranges above 600 bar the sensor 01 option is not offered, and the total error band over the temperature range widens at the lowest ranges, so check the accuracy table for 0.1 to 0.5 bar spans.
Connections, options and installation
Process connections are G1/4 female, G1/4 male, G1/2 male, 1/4 NPT male, 1/2 NPT male, and G1/2 male with a frontal or flush membrane. Electrical connections are EN 175301-803-A, Binder 723, MIL-C 26482, M12x1 and PUR or FEP cable. The cable versions need additional measures against static charge for Zone 0 to Zone 20 use, such as an earthed metal braid or conduit.
Accessories include special oil filling, mating plugs, a pressure-peak damping element for selected connections, titanium construction, temperature class selection T3, T4 or T6, and a Zener barrier listed under code F90138.
Choose the temperature class from the process and ambient temperatures together, because the permitted media temperature drops from 150 degrees C at T3 to 50 degrees C at T6. Confirm the barrier or isolator is certified for the entity values, and keep the loop calculation on file. Use the flush membrane version where the medium is viscous or contains solids.

About brand
Trafag is a Swiss manufacturer of sensors and monitoring devices for pressure, temperature and SF6 gas density, founded in 1942 and based in Bubikon, Switzerland. Its pressure transmitters, pressure switches, temperature transmitters and thermostats are used wherever robust field instruments are needed, including shipbuilding, hydraulics, railways, large engines, water treatment and test benches.
Instruments for hazardous areas
For explosive atmospheres Trafag offers an Ex range that includes intrinsically safe pressure transmitters, submersible level probes, flameproof pressostats and Ex industrial thermostats, with ATEX, IECEx and UKEX certification depending on the model. These instruments suit oil and gas, chemical and marine installations where gas or dust zones must be respected.
Technology and range
The product range spans piezoresistive and thin-film-on-steel pressure sensors, electromechanical and electronic pressure switches, level sensors, temperature gauges, thermostats and accessories such as damping elements. Trafag publishes a datasheet, instructions and certificates for each product family, so zone, accuracy and connection data can be checked before ordering.
Sourcing through Seven Star LLC
Seven Star LLC supplies Trafag instruments to customers in Oman and the GCC and quotes against the model code, range and approval required.
