Rigol DL3031A 150 V 60 A 350 W Programmable DC Electronic Load

Sink up to 60 A and 350 W for power-supply and battery testing

The Rigol DL3031A is a single-channel programmable DC electronic load rated 0 to 150 V, 0 to 60 A and up to 350 W. Instead of dissipating power in banks of resistors, it sinks a programmed current, voltage, resistance or power so you can test regulated supplies, chargers, batteries and power-electronic parts under repeatable loads.

The A model differs from the DL3031 in its software options: RIGOL lists 30 kHz dynamic mode and 0.1 mA readback resolution for the A version, whose options are installed at the factory. See also Portable Test & Measurement.

The datasheet lists DL3021 and DL3021A (150 V/40 A, 200 W), DL3031 and DL3031A (150 V/60 A, 350 W) and DL3041 (200 V/70 A, 450 W). Choose the 60 A, 350 W class when testing supplies above 200 W. Standard accessories are a power cord, a fuse matched to the 115 or 230 Vac selector and a shield; options include LAN-DL3, DIGITALIO-DL3, HIRES-DL3 and FREQ-DL3 on non-A models.

Cabling and operating notes

For large currents RIGOL says to use its listed test leads (CB-20A-780MM, CB-40A-780MM, CB-60A-780MM, 780 mm long) and, where voltage drop matters, the CB-SENSE cable with the sense terminals. The datasheet notes that CV mode should be used with a CC source, and that for a CV-to-CC source the current should be limited to 0.2 A. The unit is indoor use only and must not be used in wet conditions.

Industries and tests

Typical work includes burn-in and load testing of DC supplies, UPS and rectifier modules for telecom and industrial panels, battery discharge cycling, charger and fuel-cell testing, and MOSFET or IGBT characterisation. Because the cooling is by fan and the operating limit is 40 degC, give it clear airflow and an air-conditioned workshop.

Selection and installation notes

An electronic load is selected from the voltage, current and power of the source under test, and from the modes needed. Use leads rated for the full current with the shortest practical length, use remote sensing where the voltage drop matters, check the heat sink airflow and do not exceed the power rating at high voltage. Start tests at a low current and increase in steps, especially with batteries and supplies with current limiting.
