A 100 MHz, four-channel bench scope with deep memory

The Rigol DS1104Z Plus is the 100 MHz, four-analog-channel model of the DS1000Z Plus line. It samples at up to 1 GSa/s on one channel, stores up to 24 Mpts per acquisition and refreshes up to 30,000 waveforms per second on a 7 inch WVGA (800 x 480) intensity-graded colour display. RIGOL aims the family at design, debugging and education.

Choosing between DS1000Z models

The datasheet lists DS1054Z (50 MHz), DS1074Z Plus and DS1074Z-S Plus (70 MHz), and DS1104Z Plus and DS1104Z-S Plus (100 MHz). The DS1104Z Plus has no built-in source; the -S Plus versions add a two-channel 25 MHz function/arbitrary generator, and the DS1054Z has no digital-channel upgrade.

Setup and operation notes from the datasheet

Guaranteed specifications apply once the instrument has run for more than 30 minutes at the specified operating temperature. Cooling is by fan, so keep the vents clear. Remote control uses LAN (LXI) or USB with SCPI; RIGOL names the Ultra Sigma and Ultra Scope PC programs, and the recommended calibration interval is 18 months.

Where it is used in Gulf industry and education

Typical jobs: fault-finding on VFD driver, PLC and sensor interface boards from oil and gas, water and HVAC plants, and teaching labs. For mains-referenced work use a differential probe such as the RP1025D (25 MHz, up to 1400 Vpp) rather than the standard passive probes. The operating range is 0 to 50 degC, so keep it in an air-conditioned workshop or cabin.

Standard: four PVP3150 150 MHz passive probes, USB cable, power cord and quick guide. The datasheet also lists current probes (RP1001C to RP1005C, RP1000P supply), high-voltage probes (RP1010H, RP1018H, RP1300H), differential probes (RP1025D, RP1050D, RP1100D), the RPL1116 logic probe and the RM-DS1000Z rack kit.

Frequently asked questions

Does the DS1104Z Plus have digital channels? Not as shipped. The datasheet says 16 digital channels become available after the MSO upgrade option, which includes the RPL1116 logic probe.

What is the sample rate with all four channels on? 250 MSa/s per channel with three or four channels active; memory then drops to 6 Mpts.

Which serial buses can it decode? RS232/UART, I2C and SPI, plus parallel decoding, two buses at a time.

What are the input voltage limits? On the 1 MOhm input: CAT I 300 Vrms, CAT II 100 Vrms, 1000 Vpk transient overvoltage.
