KERN ABT 220-5DNM Analytical Balance 220 g x 0.01 mg
Description
Semi-micro analytical balance with automatic internal adjustment
The KERN ABT 220-5DNM is a single-cell analytical balance that KERN calls its premium model. It is a multi-range balance: the first range reads 82 g with 0.00001 g (0.01 mg) readability, and when the load exceeds that the balance switches automatically to 220 g with 0.0001 g. It returns to the fine range when the pan is emptied. With a typical reproducibility of 0.000007 g and a typical USP minimum sample weight of 14 mg, it is built for work where tiny sample masses decide the result.
Laboratories in refineries, petrochemical plants, water and wastewater utilities and independent testing houses use this class of balance to prepare standards, weigh reagents, determine solids and ash and check catalyst or additive samples. The brochure names laboratories, research, quality control and universities as main application areas. Internal adjustment makes the balance independent of its location of use, which matters when instruments are moved between lab rooms.
Key features from the KERN brochure
- Automatic internal adjustment when the temperature changes by 0.5 degrees C or more, or time-controlled every 4 h.
- Dosage aid with high stability mode and other filter settings; large glass draught shield with three sliding doors.
- Recipe weighing with combined tare/print function; ingredients are numbered automatically on the printout.
- GLP-compliant calibration report printout at the touch of a button, with a four-digit freely programmable identification number.
- Automatic data output to a PC or printer each time the balance is steady.
- Density determination, percentage determination, counting, averaging under unstable conditions and standby function; protective working cover included.

Selection and ordering guide
The ABT family offers four models, so choose by the sample sizes you weigh. The datasheet prints:
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| ABT 100-5NM | 101 g, 0.00001 g, plate 80 mm |
| ABT 120-5DNM | 42 g / 120 g, 0.00001 g / 0.0001 g |
| ABT 220-5DNM | 82 g / 220 g, 0.00001 g / 0.0001 g |
| ABT 320-4NM | 320 g, 0.0001 g |
Optional services: DAkkS calibration 963-101 and certificate of conformity 969-517 (only with DAkkS calibration). The datasheet lists no on-site adjustment article for this model.
Installation and operation notes
Install on a stable bench, away from drafts, air-conditioning outlets, direct sun and vibration, within 10 to 30 degrees C. Level the balance with the adjustable feet and level indicator, allow the eight hour warm-up for full accuracy, then let the internal weight perform the first adjustment. Where a bench is not rigid, an anti-vibration plate or ioniser from the accessory list reduces disturbance. In Gulf laboratories the narrow 10-30 degrees C range means the room air conditioning must run continuously, including weekends.
Applications in GCC laboratories
Typical tasks are weighing indicators and standards for water-quality tests, preparing sample aliquots for oil analysis, checking catalyst and desiccant masses, pharmaceutical QC and academic research. Density determination with the optional set YDB-03 supports solid and liquid density checks.
Accessories and related items
KERN lists the density set YDB-03, ionisers ABP-A01 and YBI-01A, protective covers ABT-A02S05, a gemstone bowl AEJ-A05, RS-232 cables ACS-A01 and 770-926, the RS-232 to USB converter AFH 13, printers YKC-01, YKG-01 and YKH-01, a Bluetooth adapter YKI-02 and a safety set of test weights 315-108-104 (10 g and 200 g, class E2). Further instruments are listed in our portable test and measurement instruments.
Use and calibration notes
Semi-micro balances are used in the region in pharmaceutical, food, petroleum and environmental laboratories and in university research. At 0.01 mg readability, the installation room matters as much as the balance. Place it on a stable weighing table away from doors, air conditioning outlets, direct sun and vibration, and allow the balance to warm up as described in the manual before use. Strong air conditioning drafts are a common source of unstable readings in the region’s laboratories.
The automatic internal adjustment helps keep readings accurate as room temperature changes, but external checks with certified test weights should still be done at regular intervals, and calibration should be arranged where results are used for quality or regulatory records.
Keep a simple record of test-weight checks, so drift can be seen early.
