Helukabel TOPFLEX-EMV-UV Outdoor VFD Motor Cable

Description

The Helukabel TOPFLEX-EMV-UV-2YSLCYK-J is a black, UV-resistant, double-screened four-core motor cable for frequency converters, rated 0.6/1 kV. Cores are PE-insulated brown, black, grey and green-yellow, with a plastic-coated aluminium foil and a tinned-copper braid of about 85 percent coverage under a black special-PVC sheath. It is the outdoor-capable member of the TOPFLEX-EMV family, for drives whose motor cables run in sun-exposed trays or on outdoor structures.

Outdoor drive cabling in hot, sunny sites

Sunlight breaks down ordinary PVC sheaths over time, so a drive cable that is exposed to the sky needs a sheath tested for UV and weathering. Helukabel lists this type as resistant to UV radiation and weather effects to DIN EN ISO 4892-2 and as suitable for outdoor use, with the same electrical design as the indoor TOPFLEX-EMV 2YSLCY-J: low mutual capacitance, low coupling resistance and two screens.

The data sheet specification is a medium mechanical stress connection for fixed installation and occasional free movement. It is not a continuous chain cable. Where a UL/CSA listing is required, Helukabel lists separate UL/CSA versions of this family, so quote the exact part number from the data sheet table. For a symmetrical earth layout with three split protective cores, the indoor TOPFLEX-EMV-3-PLUS type is the alternative.

How the Helukabel TOPFLEX-EMV-UV-2YSLCYK-J motor cable works

A frequency converter makes the motor voltage by switching very fast, and this creates high-frequency currents and electrical noise. A normal cable can radiate this noise and pick up interference. The TOPFLEX-EMV-UV-2YSLCYK-J has two screens: a plastic-coated aluminium foil and a braid of tinned copper with about 85 percent coverage. The screens carry the high-frequency currents back to the drive and keep the noise inside the cable. Three phase cores and one green-yellow protective conductor are laid in a symmetric way, so the motor current stays balanced, and the black special-PVC sheath resists sunlight.

Where the TOPFLEX-EMV-UV-2YSLCYK-J is used

  • Motor leads from frequency converters to outdoor motors.
  • Cable trays in the sun and on outdoor structures.
  • Pumps, fans and conveyors in yards and plant areas.
  • Fixed installations with occasional movement.

Selection checklist for the TOPFLEX-EMV-UV-2YSLCYK-J

  • Cross-section and number of cores, with the protective conductor.
  • Nominal voltage of 0.6/1 kV and test voltage of 4000 V between cores.
  • Temperature range, flexible -5 to +70 degrees C and fixed -40 to +70 degrees C.
  • Bending radius: 10 times the diameter below 12 mm, and 15 times above, for flexible use.
  • Fixed laying radius of 4 times the outer diameter.
  • UV and weather resistance to DIN EN ISO 4892-2.
  • Flame retardance to DIN EN 60332-1-2.
  • EMC performance to DIN VDE 0875-11 and DIN EN 55011.
  • Cable length from the drive to the motor, and the drive limit for it.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes

Connect the screen at both ends over a large area, using EMC glands or clamps, so the high-frequency return path is short. Keep the motor cable apart from signal and sensor cables, and cross them at right angles. Keep the cable length within the limit given by the drive maker. The cable is for fixed installation with occasional free movement, so do not use it as a continuous chain cable.

Requesting a quotation for the Helukabel TOPFLEX-EMV-UV-2YSLCYK-J

Send the number of cores, the cross-section and the length. Seven Star LLC serves industrial customers in Oman and the GCC and replies with a quotation based on the information provided.

Why sunlight matters for cable sheaths

Ordinary sheaths become brittle after long sun exposure. A sheath tested to the UV standard keeps its flexibility and protects the screens underneath.

Indoor and outdoor versions

The electrical design matches the indoor TOPFLEX-EMV type, so the outdoor version is chosen where the sheath will see sun.

Records for drive cabling

Keep the cable length, the cross-section and the screen termination method with the drive file.

Choosing the cable cross-section for a drive

Select the cross-section from the motor current and the laying conditions, and keep the voltage drop within the limit used on the project. Confirm the cable outer diameter against the gland size before the order.

Marking and traceability

The sheath carries a metre marking, which helps check the length used and keep records of each run.

Documents and quotation

The Helukabel data sheet (05.06.2024) is attached. Seven Star LLC supplies Helukabel cables in Oman against the part number. Confirm motor current, derating for ambient temperature, cable length from the drive, and the EMC cable gland or clamp used at each end. Pair with cable glands and accessories.
