Types of radar level transmitter in this category

Non-contact radar sensors such as the VEGA VEGAPULS 6X, 64, 31, C 11, C 21 and C 22, Endress+Hauser Micropilot FMR60 and FMR231, KROHNE OPTIWAVE 6500, Magnetrol Pulsar R80 and Rosemount 5400 measure liquids and solids in tanks, silos and open channels. Guided wave radar transmitters like the Endress+Hauser Levelflex FMP40 and FMP51, ABB MT5100, Rosemount 3308A wireless and Turck LS series follow a probe or cable for interface and difficult applications.

How to select a radar level transmitter

Define the medium, tank height, process pressure and temperature, and any foam, turbulence, dust or internal obstructions. Choose 80 GHz radar for narrow beams and small connections, guided wave radar for interface, low dielectric media or turbulent surfaces. Specify process connection, antenna or probe material, output and hazardous area approval.

Send the model code, or medium, measuring range, pressure, temperature, connection, output, Ex rating and quantity.

What to include in your inquiry

These details let us quote the right item the first time.

  • Medium (liquid or solid) and its properties
  • Tank height or measuring range
  • Process pressure and temperature
  • Preferred principle (radar, ultrasonic, DP, switch)
  • Process connection and material
  • Output signal and area classification

Missing some of them? Send what you have. A nameplate photo or an old part number is enough to start.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the advantage of 80 GHz radar?
It focuses the beam more tightly, so it avoids tank internals and works through small process connections.
When should I use guided wave radar?
For interface measurement, low dielectric liquids, foam or turbulent surfaces, and narrow chambers or bypasses.
Can radar measure solids?
Yes. Radar sensors are widely used for powders and bulk solids in silos, where dust does not affect the signal.
Is radar affected by vapour or pressure?
Very little. Radar is largely unaffected by temperature, pressure and vapour, unlike ultrasonic sensors.
What should I send for a quotation?
The model code, or medium, range, pressure, temperature, connection, output, approvals and quantity.
