How to specify an electric motor

Start with the load: power, speed, starting torque and duty cycle. Then the supply: voltage, frequency and the starting method, which may be direct on line, a soft starter or a frequency converter. Converter operation calls for suitable winding insulation and, on larger frames, an insulated bearing. Frame size and mounting (foot, flange or both) must match the driven machine. IEC motors follow IEC 60034, with efficiency classes IE1 to IE4, and NEMA motors follow NEMA MG 1. The two systems use different frame dimensions, so they are not interchangeable without checking shaft height and fixing holes. In classified areas the motor needs flameproof (Ex d) or increased safety (Ex e) protection with a suitable temperature class.

For a gear unit the key figures are ratio, output torque, service factor, mounting position and shaft arrangement.

What to send for a motor or gearmotor quotation

Nameplate data is the best basis: type designation, serial number, power, voltage, frequency, speed, frame size, mounting and protection class. For spares such as brakes and rectifiers, add the part number. We check the data against the manufacturer documentation and propose the manufacturer’s successor when a type is obsolete.

Can an IEC motor replace a NEMA motor, or the other way round?
Electrically it is often possible if power, speed, voltage and frequency agree, but the mechanical dimensions differ. IEC and NEMA use different frame systems, so shaft height, shaft diameter, foot hole spacing and flange patterns must be compared one by one. An adapter plate, a different coupling half or a modified base may be needed. Send the nameplate of the existing motor and we compare the dimensions.
What should I check before running a motor on a variable frequency drive?
Confirm with the manufacturer's data that the winding insulation is suitable for converter supply at your voltage, and if an insulated bearing or shaft grounding is recommended for the frame size. At low speed a self-ventilated motor cools less, so constant-torque loads may need forced ventilation or derating. For Ex motors, converter operation must be covered by the motor's certificate.
Which explosion protection type do I need for a motor?
The hazardous area classification of the site decides. Flameproof Ex d motors and increased safety Ex e motors are the usual types for Zone 1, and simpler non-sparking designs are permitted in Zone 2. Dust areas need dust-protected versions. The gas group and temperature class on the motor certificate must cover the substances present. Send the zone, gas group and temperature class from your area classification.
How do I order a replacement gearmotor or gear unit?
Send the complete type designation and serial number from the nameplate. They define the gear size, ratio, mounting position, shaft and flange version, motor size and brake. If the plate is unreadable, give the output speed or ratio, motor power, shaft diameter, mounting position and a photo. We check the designation against the manufacturer documentation and offer the current equivalent if the series has changed.
What do you need to quote a motor brake or brake rectifier?
The part number from the old component, plus the motor type designation and serial number. For a brake, add the braking torque and the coil voltage. For a rectifier, add the supply voltage and the wiring arrangement, because rectifiers of similar appearance differ in input voltage and switching function. A photo of the label on the brake or rectifier is useful.
