SEW-Eurodrive Brake BMG1 10Nm – Part No: 08671427
Description
Overview
SEW-Eurodrive part number 08671427 is a SEW-Eurodrive BMG1 brake, a spring-applied disc brake with 10 Nm braking torque, supplied in the BMG1 HF version with a coil for 400 V AC supply (167 V DC at the coil after rectification). The BMG1 is one of the smaller sizes in the SEW-Eurodrive BMG brake range. It fits on the non-drive end of SEW AC motors and gearmotors and holds the load whenever the motor is stopped or the supply is lost.
The brake works on the fail-safe principle. Compression springs press the brake disc against the friction surface when the coil is de-energised. When DC voltage reaches the coil through the SEW brake rectifier, the brake releases so the motor can run. Because the brake applies automatically when power is removed, it holds position during normal stops, emergency stops and power failures.

SEW-Eurodrive BMG1 Selection Notes
In the SEW operating instructions for DT/DV motors, the BMG1 is the brake assigned to motor size 80, with a maximum braking torque of 10 Nm. The torque is set by the spring combination: six standard springs give 10 Nm, four standard plus two red springs give 7.5 Nm, and three of each give 6.0 Nm. A replacement brake should therefore be checked against the torque on the motor nameplate, not only against the brake size.
The coil is matched to the supply voltage. For the 400 V AC range (370-414 V) the corresponding DC value is 167 V, and the holding current is 0.15 A measured in the supply lead to the rectifier. For 24 V DC supply on brake sizes BMG05 to BMG4, the standard control unit is the BS24; with AC supply it is a BG rectifier. In SEW type codes, HF stands for the lockable manual brake release and HR for the self-reengaging manual release.
SEW-Eurodrive BMG1 Inspection and Maintenance Notes
SEW specifies inspection of BMG05-BMG8 brakes at least every 3000 operating hours when the brake is used as a working brake, and every 2 to 4 years, depending on conditions, when it is used as a holding brake. The inspection covers brake disc thickness, lining, working air gap, pressure plate, carrier and pressure rings, and removal of abraded material.
The working air gap must stay between 0.25 and 0.6 mm. The brake disc is replaced when its thickness is down to 9 mm on brake motors up to size 100. On versions with manual release, the floating clearance between the conical springs and the setting nuts must be set to 1.5 mm so that the pressure plate can follow lining wear.
How the SEW-Eurodrive BMG1 Brake Works
The SEW-Eurodrive BMG1 brake is a DC-operated electromagnetic disc brake. The brake disc is keyed to the motor shaft through a carrier and sits between the pressure plate and the friction surface on the motor end shield. With the coil de-energised, the compression springs push the pressure plate against the disc and the friction linings transmit the braking torque to the motor housing. When the brake rectifier supplies DC voltage to the coil, the magnetic field pulls the pressure plate back against the spring force, the disc runs free and the motor can turn.
Because braking torque comes from the springs rather than from the electrical supply, the brake holds the load when the supply fails. This is why spring-applied brakes are used on vertical axes, inclined conveyors and other drives where an uncontrolled movement would be unsafe.
Typical Signs That a BMG1 Brake Needs Service
- The brake does not release: check the rectifier, coil supply voltage, coil continuity and air gap.
- The brake slips or stopping distance increases: check lining wear, the air gap and the spring set against the torque on the nameplate.
- Delayed application: check the switching arrangement (AC-side or DC-side switching) of the brake circuit.
- Noise or heat at the non-drive end: check for worn linings, abraded material or a dragging disc.
Typical Applications in Oman & the GCC
SEW brake motors are widely installed on conveyor systems, bagging and palletising lines, water and wastewater plant drives, cement and building material handling, and utility equipment in oil and gas facilities. High ambient temperatures and dust in the region make regular checks of air gap and lining wear particularly important, and keeping a correct spare BMG1 brake on site shortens downtime when a brake has reached its wear limit.
Why Seven Star LLC
Seven Star LLC supplies SEW-Eurodrive BMG brakes and matching brake rectifiers for maintenance programmes across Oman and the GCC. Before we quote, we check the brake size, torque and coil voltage against your motor and brake nameplate data. A brake of the wrong size or voltage will not hold the load correctly.

About brand
Conveyor drives with a red gearcase are a familiar sight in almost any factory, and most come from SEW-EURODRIVE, founded in 1931 and based in Bruchsal, Germany. Its modular system combines gear units, AC motors, brakes and inverters under one type designation. Seven Star LLC lists SEW-EURODRIVE gearmotors, gear units and brake components, and supplies SEW-EURODRIVE drives and spare parts to plants in Oman as an independent supplier.
SEW-EURODRIVE product families on this page
Three gear unit lines are listed. R series helical gear units have coaxial input and output. K series helical-bevel gearmotors turn the output through 90 degrees and suit conveyors and hoists. The WES series is the stainless steel SPIROPLAN right-angle gear unit for hygienic and washdown areas, alongside the RES and KES stainless steel units. The remaining items are brake parts: the BG1.2 brake rectifier (part number 8269920), the BSG brake control unit for 24 V DC supply (8254591) and a BMG1 brake rated 10 Nm (08671427). SEW also makes MOVITRAC and MOVIDRIVE inverters and MOVIMOT decentralized drives.
Where SEW-EURODRIVE drives are used
Belt and roller conveyors, bucket elevators, mixers, agitators, cranes, bottling and packaging lines, baggage systems and water treatment equipment all use these gearmotors. In GCC plants the usual request is a like-for-like replacement of a drive or brake that has been running for years.
Ordering SEW-EURODRIVE parts: what we need
The nameplate decides everything. Send a photo, or copy these fields: the full type designation, the serial number, gear ratio, mounting position (M1 to M6), output speed and motor power, motor voltage and frequency, and for brakemotors the brake type, brake voltage and braking torque. For a rectifier or brake control unit the eight-digit part number is enough. For a gear unit without motor, add the input adapter size and shaft or hollow shaft dimensions.
