Overview

The JIE JD Motor is the three-phase asynchronous (induction) motor range designed and built by JIE Drive Technology, the same manufacturer behind the JRT gearmotor and JRH industrial gear unit families. JIE developed the JD series with its own intellectual property to give its drives a matched prime mover, and also sells it as a standalone IEC motor. The range covers frame sizes 63 to 315 and output from 0.12 kW to 200 kW, with energy efficiency classes IE2 and IE3 across 0.75 to 200 kW and IE4 available, which places the JIE JD Motor squarely in the general-purpose industrial motor market.

Operating Principle

A three-phase asynchronous motor works by feeding the stator winding with three alternating currents displaced by 120 degrees. Together they create a magnetic field that rotates at synchronous speed, set by the supply frequency and the number of poles. That rotating field cuts the bars of the squirrel-cage rotor, induces currents in them, and the interaction between the induced rotor currents and the stator field produces torque. The rotor always runs slightly slower than the field; this slip is what keeps the induction process going, which is why the motor is called asynchronous.

The squirrel-cage design has no brushes, slip rings or commutator, so a JIE JD Motor needs very little maintenance beyond bearing care and keeping the cooling path clear. Efficiency class depends on how much of the input power is lost as heat in the copper, the iron and the bearings and fan. Moving from IE2 to IE3 or IE4 reduces those losses, which on a motor that runs all day in a hot plant room translates into lower electricity cost and lower winding temperature. JIE notes that JDN and JDU motors can be controlled by an inverter for variable speed duty.

Engineering Design of the JIE JD Motor

JIE describes the JIE JD Motor as low-noise and lightweight, with a modular construction. The series supports B3 foot mounting, B5 flange mounting with clearance holes, B14 flange mounting with threaded holes and B35 combined foot and flange mounting. The modular kit allows the JIE JD Motor to be combined with an independent forced-cooling fan, a brake, a backstop, an encoder or an inverter.
