C-TEC CFP708-4 8 Zone Conventional Fire Alarm Panel

Description

Overview

The C-TEC CFP708-4 is an eight-zone conventional fire alarm control panel, LPCB certified to EN54 parts 2 and 4, and manufactured by C-TEC in the UK. It provides eight detector zone circuits and four conventional sounder circuits in an attractive flush- or surface-mountable plastic enclosure, with an intuitive user interface using colour-coded buttons and combined keypad/keyswitch entry. The panel is supplied with an integral 1.5 A EN54-4/A2 compliant switch-mode power supply and space for two 12 V VRLA backup batteries.

Engineering and Design

A wide range of engineering functions is built in, including zone test, coincidence, zone delay and non-latching zones, plus comprehensive test and fault-finding facilities. The panel includes two on-board relays (fire and fault), two open-collector outputs (remote and reset), and class change and alert inputs for integration with building management systems. Eight zone circuits support a maximum circuit length of 500 m with up to 25 detectors per zone (32 combined with manual call points), and the quiescent current draw is a low 25 mA.

The CFP708-4 operates from a 230 V 50/60 Hz mains supply with a maximum 350 mA current draw, providing an internal supply of 19-28.5 V DC (nominal 27 V) with total output current limited to 1.5 A. Two 12 V VRLA batteries (max 3.2-3.3 Ah) in series provide standby power, with a minimum battery size of 1.2 Ah. Expansion connections support up to eight two-wire repeaters (one CFP761 network card per system) and optional CFP relay boards, and the panel is fully compatible with C-TEC’s ActiV range of conventional detectors with options for EN54-13 compliant sounder circuit boards.

Installation and Commissioning of the CFP708-4

Good conventional systems start with a sensible zone plan. Keep each zone to a clearly defined area, usually one floor or one fire compartment, so the fire brigade and the building staff can go straight to the right place when the panel shows an alarm. Label every zone on the panel and on a zone chart mounted next to it.

  • Install the panel at the main entrance or the fire control point, at a height where the display and controls are easy to read and operate.
  • Use fire-resistant cable for detector and sounder circuits and keep it segregated from mains and data cabling.
  • Fit the correct end-of-line device on every detector and sounder circuit; a missing or wrong device will show as a fault.
  • Connect the mains supply from a dedicated, clearly labelled and lockable isolator.
  • Size the standby batteries from a proper calculation of quiescent and alarm loads for the required standby period, within the battery limits given above.

Commissioning checks

Before handover, measure the insulation resistance of all field wiring, test every detector and manual call point, confirm each one reports to the correct zone, and check sounder levels in every area. Prove the fire and fault relay outputs to any BMS, door release or plant shutdown interfaces, and record the results in the commissioning certificate.

Maintenance and Troubleshooting

Routine servicing should follow the local fire code and the maintainer’s schedule: a weekly call-point test by the building user, and periodic inspection of detectors, batteries and interfaces by a competent engineer. Replace standby batteries at the interval recommended by the battery manufacturer.

  • Zone fault: open circuit, loose terminal, missing end-of-line device or a removed detector head.
  • Sounder circuit fault: wiring break or short, or an incorrect end-of-line device.
  • Battery or charger fault: aged batteries or a disconnected battery lead.
  • Repeated false alarms: the wrong detector type for the area, for example a smoke detector in a kitchen or dusty plant room.

Applications in Oman and the GCC

An eight-zone conventional panel suits villas, schools, clinics, retail units, small offices, warehouses and light industrial buildings in Oman, where the building does not justify an addressable system. Plans are generally reviewed against local civil defence requirements, so keep certificates and datasheets ready for submission.

About brand

C-TEC has made life safety electronics in Wigan, United Kingdom since 1981: fire alarm panels, detectors, power supplies, disabled refuge and call systems. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Oman, lists C-TEC panels and detectors such as the XFP501/CA single loop addressable fire panel, the CP416 CAST-PRO addressable optical smoke detector and the CFP708-4 eight zone conventional fire alarm panel.

C-TEC fire alarm families

The manufacturer divides fire systems into conventional and addressable. On the conventional side are the CFP panels in 2 to 8 zones, with ActiV detectors, sounders and call points. On the addressable side, XFP panels cover one or two loops and ZFP panels up to eight, working with C-TEC's own CAST protocol and CAST-PRO devices. Addressable panels are also made for Apollo XP95 and Discovery and for Hochiki ESP devices, so the protocol of a panel must match the detectors on its loop. EN54-4 power supplies, SigTEL refuge systems and EVAC-ALERT panels complete the range.

Ordering C-TEC equipment: what we need

Send the full part number including the suffix after the slash, which separates protocol versions of the same panel. Tell us the detector protocol already on site, the number of loops or zones, and any network or repeater requirement. For projects in the GCC, name the approval the consultant specifies so we request the matching certificates from the manufacturer.
