Brüel & Kjær VIBROCONTROL 1000 (VC-1000)

Description

Overview

The Brüel & Kjær VIBROCONTROL 1000 (VC-1000) is an industry-standard, single-channel vibration monitoring instrument engineered to provide permanent, continuous protection for heavy rotating machinery. Manufactured by B&K Vibro, a globally recognized authority in machine condition monitoring, the VC-1000 is explicitly designed to monitor absolute bearing vibrations in compliance with DIN ISO 10816 standards. Seven Star LLC proudly supplies this robust protection system to power generation plants, refineries, and large-scale manufacturing facilities across the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC region.

Catastrophic machine failure often begins with minute, unnoticeable increases in vibration caused by rotor unbalance, misalignment, or bearing degradation. The VC-1000 acts as a vigilant frontline defense mechanism. By permanently monitoring the mechanical health of critical assets such as industrial fans, heavy-duty pumps, and compressors, this system allows facility managers to shift from reactive repairs to predictive maintenance, saving millions in potential downtime and equipment replacement costs.

Measurement & Protection Technology

The VC-1000 (specifically the highly utilized CV series) continuously processes signals from electro-dynamic vibration velocity sensors securely mounted to the machine casing or bearing pedestal. The instrument is capable of calculating two primary diagnostic values: the Root Mean Square (RMS) of vibration velocity, which provides a comprehensive assessment of the machine’s overall vibration severity, and the Peak value of vibration displacement, which is critical for identifying sudden, high-impact mechanical faults.

To ensure active machine protection, the unit features programmable limit relays. Facility engineers can configure distinct “Alert” and “Danger” thresholds directly into the device. If the measured vibration exceeds the “Alert” level, an early warning is triggered, allowing operators to schedule maintenance. If the vibration spikes past the “Danger” threshold, the VC-1000’s relays can be hardwired directly into the Motor Control Center (MCC) or Emergency Shutdown (ESD) system to instantly trip the machine, preventing catastrophic mechanical disintegration.

Engineering & Field Integration

Designed for deployment in unforgiving industrial environments, the VC-1000 is housed in a rugged, IP65-rated cast aluminum enclosure that thoroughly protects the internal microelectronics from heavy dust ingress and water spray. The system operates reliably across a wide ambient temperature range of 0°C to +65°C, making it exceptionally well-suited for the harsh mechanical rooms and outdoor plant environments typical of the Middle East.

In terms of system integration, the VC-1000 bridges the gap between localized machine protection and centralized plant monitoring. Alongside its hardwired trip relays, the unit provides a continuous 0/4–20 mA or 0–10 V analog output proportional to the vibration level. This standardized signal can be seamlessly routed into plant-wide SCADA, PLC, or Distributed Control Systems (DCS), allowing control room operators to monitor real-time vibration trends alongside temperature and flow data.

Key Features

  • Dedicated single-channel continuous vibration monitoring for maximum reliability on critical individual assets.
  • Measures both vibration velocity (RMS) and vibration displacement (Peak) in accordance with DIN ISO 10816.

Industrial Applications

The Brüel & Kjær VC-1000 is an essential protective component for any continuous-process industry. In Oman’s extensive oil and gas sector, it is heavily relied upon to monitor the health of massive centrifugal pumps, gas compressors, and cooling tower fans, ensuring these multi-million dollar assets do not run to failure. Similarly, in large-scale desalination and power generation plants, the VC-1000 protects critical boiler feed pumps and auxiliary turbines.

Cement manufacturing plants and steel mills utilize the system to monitor heavy crushers, extruders, and raw material conveyors, where extreme vibration is common but structural failure is disastrous. Seven Star LLC provides comprehensive consultation on vibration sensor placement, monitoring system configuration, and complete procurement services to ensure your most vital machinery remains protected 24/7.

Alarm Configuration and Relay Data

Setting up the VIBROCONTROL 1000 for a specific machine is a matter of choosing the measuring range and then placing the two limit values within it. Both the Alert (LIM1, pre-alarm) and Danger (LIM2, main alarm) thresholds are adjustable anywhere between 10% and 100% of full-scale range, with a setting error of 5% of full scale and a switching hysteresis of 3% of full scale that prevents relay chatter when a machine idles close to a threshold. Response delay for each limit is jumper-selected at 30 ms, 1 s, 3 s or 10 s, so a short delay can be used on a fan that must trip quickly while a longer delay rides through the transient of a large pump starting against a closed valve.

The two alarm relays are monostable and are configured by jumper as normally energized or normally de-energized, and as latching or non-latching, which allows the instrument to be wired for fail-safe tripping into a Motor Control Centre or shutdown system. Contacts are rated for 250 V AC at a maximum of 1 A (250 VA) or 150 V DC at a maximum of 0.5 A on ohmic loads, and a spark suppressor must be fitted where the load is inductive. The separate OK relay is monostable, permanently normally energized and non-latching, and it reports interruption of the sensor system, the signal line or the mains supply without any response delay — so a broken sensor cable is flagged immediately rather than being read as a healthy low vibration level.

Frequency Response, Variants and Field Installation

VIBROCONTROL belongs to the Brüel & Kjær Vibro machinery protection line rather than the Brüel & Kjær acoustics and sound-measurement range, and the VC-1000 is supplied in two type codes: CV-110 for 230/115 V AC supplies, +10% / −15%, 50 to 60 Hz at approximately 10 VA, and CV-116 for 24 V DC, accepting 18 to 32 V at approximately 10 W. Measurement accuracy is stated as ±5% of the measured value plus ±3% of the full-scale measuring range. The usable frequency band follows the natural frequency of the sensor chosen: 10 to 1000 Hz with an 8 Hz sensor and 15 to 1000 Hz with a 15 Hz sensor, and each can be extended to 1 or 2 Hz respectively when frequency-response linearization is selected. The 10 to 1000 Hz band is the range DIN ISO 10816 recommends for RMS velocity assessment of bearing vibration.

Mechanically the instrument measures 220 × 120 × 90 mm and provides eight M16 × 1.5 feed-through glands for sensor, output, relay and supply wiring, with storage rated from −40 °C to +100 °C and humidity to 95% non-condensing. The velocity sensors are self-generating and need no supply from the monitor. For hazardous areas the Ex-form sensors VS-0168 and VS-0169 are used with the AC-2103 terminal protective housing, while standard-form VS-068 and VS-069 sensors pair with the AC-2104 housing and AC-1112 shielded signal cable. Seven Star LLC specifies the complete chain — monitor type code, sensor orientation, cable and terminal housing — so that a replacement channel arriving on a plant in Oman or the GCC matches the installed configuration exactly.

An eddy-current measuring chain has three parts that must match: the probe, the extension cable and the oscillator (driver). The total electrical length is calibrated as one system, so a probe from one length or model cannot simply be mixed with an oscillator for another. On B&K Vibro part numbers, the digits after the model (for example IN-083/3/070/50/0/206) set the thread, the probe length, the cable length and options, so the full code is needed to supply the right part.

Where Brüel & Kjær products are used

In Oman and the GCC, B&K Vibro sensors and monitors protect gas turbines, steam turbines, compressors, large pumps and fans in oil and gas, power and desalination plants. The sound instruments are used for occupational noise surveys and equipment noise testing.
