Extech PQ3450 3-Phase Power Analyzer and Datalogger

Description

PQ3450 is the Extech portable three-phase power analyzer and datalogger. It measures voltage up to 600 V, current through user-selectable clamp inputs, and up to 35 parameters including kW, kVA, kVAR, power factor, frequency, phase angle and energy, and it saves readings to an SD card in spreadsheet-ready format. Current clamps are sold separately.

A portable power survey tool for panels and feeders

Energy audits and load studies need a meter that can be clamped onto a live feeder without opening cables. The PQ3450 supports 1P/2W, 1P/3W, 3P/3W and 3P/4W configurations, shows phase and system values on a 320 x 240 pixel backlit dot-matrix display, and lets the CT ratio (1 to 600) and PT ratio (1 to 1000) be entered so that readings can refer to the primary side of larger distribution systems.

The datalogger stores up to 30,000 readings per file on a removable SD card at a sampling rate from 2 seconds to 2 hours (7200 seconds in the manual). A built-in clock and calendar time-stamp the data, and the manual describes an RS232 port for connection to a PC.

Features stated in the datasheet and manual

  • Voltage 10 to 600 V AC auto-ranging; true RMS; safety rating IEC1010 CAT III 600 V.
  • Universal clamp input: 200 mV to 3 V output clamps, user-selectable, with current ranges from 20 A to 6000 A as listed in the manual.
  • Active, apparent and reactive power and energy (MWH, MVAH, MVARH) readouts.
  • Complete with four voltage leads with alligator clips, eight AA batteries, SD card, universal AC adaptor (100 to 240 V) and case.

Choosing the clamp set

The meter is ordered as PQ3450; clamp sets are PQ34-2 (200 A current clamp probes, set of 3), PQ34-12 (1200 A clamps, set of 3) and PQ34-30 (3000 A flexible current probes, 24 in / 600 mm, set of 3), and PQ1000 is a set of four voltage test leads. Kits PQ3450-2, PQ3450-12 and PQ3450-30 combine the meter with each clamp set.

Choose the clamp rating from the feeder current: the 200 A and 1200 A jaws open 0.8 in (19 mm) and 2 in (50 mm), while the flexible probe wraps around busbars. Add the clamp accuracy to the meter accuracy to estimate system accuracy.

Connection and safety notes

Connect the four voltage leads and the three clamps according to the selected wiring system, and set the clamp ratio in the menu to match the probe in use. The manual states that voltage inputs are limited to 600 V CAT III and that overloads above 720 V AC RMS are shown as OL.

Only trained personnel should connect to live panels, and the meter should be used with insulating gloves, rated probes and a lock-out procedure as required by site rules.

Typical uses in industrial and building plants

General engineering note: a portable analyzer is used to check motor loads before and after maintenance, balance single-phase loads, verify power factor correction and run week-long load profiles on chiller, pump and compressor feeders before a retrofit or a capacity study. The SD card data opens directly in a spreadsheet for charting.

Field use and calibration notes

Select the current clamps to match the conductor sizes and current ranges in the panels to be surveyed. Follow the safety instructions and wear suitable protective equipment when connecting to live panels. Arrange calibration at regular intervals.
