Lantronix XPC240300S-02 xPico 240 Embedded Wi-Fi IoT Gateway

Description

Dual-band Wi-Fi and Ethernet on a module that plugs into the host board

The Lantronix XPC240300S-02 is the single-quantity xPico 240 embedded IoT gateway with an edge connector and two u.FL antenna connectors. The xPico 240 family combines dual-band 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi with a 10/100 Ethernet interface on one small module, so a machine builder can give an existing microcontroller product managed wireless connectivity without writing Wi-Fi drivers. The manufacturer describes the series as an embedded solution for managed industrial wireless connectivity.

The module can act as a network co-processor that takes over all IoT communication from the host microcontroller, or as a wireless microcontroller when the supplied SDK is used. Concurrent Soft AP plus client mode lets a technician connect directly to the machine for service while the product stays on the plant network. The edge-connector format measures 22 mm x 35.5 mm x 2.73 mm; the LGA format of the same family is 17 mm x 25 mm x 2 mm.

Which xPico 240 code to order

The xPico 240 series has four hardware variants in the bulletin: XPC2401 (dual u.FL antenna, LGA), XPC2402 (on-module antenna, LGA), XPC2403 (dual u.FL antenna, edge connector) and XPC2404 (on-module antenna, edge connector). The manufacturer page then lists each with a suffix: S means a single unit, B means tray packaging. XPC240300S-02 is therefore the dual u.FL, edge connector, single-unit code; XPC240300B-02 is the same module in tray quantity. The related evaluation kit is XPC240300EK, which carries the Wi-Fi plus Ethernet module for bench testing.

Pick dual u.FL when the module sits inside a metal enclosure and the antennas must be mounted remotely through an antenna cable; pick the on-module antenna variants only when the host design leaves the antenna area clear. See the industrial communications category for related gateways and device servers.

Design-in and security notes

Serial data can be passed transparently through TruPort Serial, which the bulletin says supports hundreds of proprietary and standard fieldbus serial protocols, while TruPort Socket gives the host full control over multiple TCP, UDP or TLS connections. The host can drive the module in command mode over the UART or leave configuration to the network side through web service APIs and XML records. Security is layered: secure boot protects the firmware image, secure FOTA updates replace it, and role based access control plus software-controlled enabling of network service ports limit exposure.

The 3.3 V supply and a 580 mA boot peak should be allowed for in the host regulator design, and the standby current of 30 uA matters for battery products. Because the module is surface mounted or edge connected, antenna placement, ground plane and the 5 GHz channel plan for the site should be reviewed with the user documentation. For GCC deployments, check that the radio type approvals required by the destination country are covered; the bulletin lists FCC, IC, RED, MIC, SRRC and AU/NZS only.
