Brand:

Lantronix XPP1003000-04R XPort Pro Embedded Device Server

Description

A Linux-capable network module the size of an RJ45 jack

The Lantronix XPP1003000-04R is the bulk-pack XPort Pro embedded device server with encryption, the extended temperature range and the Linux operating system option, fitted with 16MB of SDRAM. It is an integrated RJ45 module: the Ethernet magnetics, connector, 32-bit processor and memory sit inside a package of 33.9 x 16.25 x 13.5 mm that weighs 9.6 g, so an equipment designer can add a network port to a serial product without laying out an Ethernet PHY or writing a TCP/IP stack.

The module is footprint compatible with the earlier XPort, but the XPort Pro adds enough processing power and memory to run application code on the module itself. The manufacturer positions it for edge computing in machine-to-machine products, and the Linux variant listed here lets an OEM compile and deploy its own software next to the serial-to-Ethernet tunnel. Security options in the product bulletin include SSLv3 and SSHv2 client and server, certificates of 128, 256, 512 or 1024 bits, AES, 3DES and RC4 encryption, and SHA-1, MD5 and Base-64 user access lists.

Reading the XPort Pro order codes

The product bulletin lists five related order numbers. XPP1002000-02R is the extended-temperature, encrypted module with Evolution OS and 16MB SDRAM in bulk, and XPP1003000-04R is the same hardware class with the Linux OS in bulk. The two codes ending in S (XPP100200S-02R and XPP100300S-04R) are sample quantities. For development, the bulletin names the XP10010NMK-01 universal demo board (module sold separately), the XPPDK1000-EVO-02 Evolution development kit, the XPPDK1000-LNX-02 Linux development kit and the 930-060-R USB BDM debug probe, which must be bought separately for the development kits. The suffix after the dash is a hardware revision, so quote the full code when ordering.

Choose the Linux code when your firmware team intends to run its own applications on the module; choose the Evolution OS code when you only need a configured serial-to-network tunnel with the standard Lantronix management tools. See the industrial communications category for other device servers and gateways.

Integration and operating notes from the user guide

The XPort Pro user guide describes the module as a complete network-enabling solution measuring 13.50 x 16.25 x 33.90 mm. Its default server ports are TCP 22 for SSH command mode, TCP 23 for Telnet, TCP 80 and 443 for the web manager, UDP 161 for SNMP, TCP 21 for FTP, UDP 69 for TFTP, UDP 30718 for the Lantronix Discovery Protocol, and TCP/UDP 10001 and 10002 for tunnels 1 and 2. Firewalls on the plant network therefore need only the ports the project actually uses.

Configuration can be done with the DeviceInstaller utility, the web manager, the command line or XML records. The guide also documents a Modbus function: with Modbus/TCP on port 502, ASCII or RTU serial slaves can be reached over an existing TCP/IP Modbus network, and the three configurable pins (CP1 to CP3) can be read and written as coils or registers through default Modbus groups. The Com Port Redirector and Secure Com Port Redirector utilities let Windows applications keep using a virtual COM port. A universal demo board is the quickest way to prove the serial settings before the module is soldered into a product.

Where this module fits

Typical hosts are meters, controllers, analysers, access-control units and instruments that already speak serial and need an Ethernet connection with encryption. In hot GCC installations the -40 to 85 C rating is the relevant figure, but remember it describes the module only; the host enclosure, supply and board layout decide the real temperature at the part. Confirm pin-out, footprint and firmware choice against the user guide before committing a design.
