Tektronix DMM4050 6.5-Digit Precision Bench Multimeter

Description

DMM4050 is a Tektronix 6.5-digit bench multimeter with a basic DC voltage accuracy of up to 0.0024 percent (1 year), dual display, TrendPlot recorder mode and, unlike the sister DMM4040, built-in temperature and capacitance measurement.

Precision readings with a dual display and trend recording

Dual display lets you measure two parameters of one signal from a single test connection, for example AC volts with frequency. Graphical modes show a real-time TrendPlot for hours or days, a histogram for the spread of readings, and statistics (minimum, maximum, average, standard deviation) for a drifting reference or a slowly stabilising supply.

The DMM4050 replaces a separate temperature meter, capacitance meter, counter and continuity tester. The 2 x 4-wire resistance technique and front and rear 2 x 4 inputs suit bench work and rack integration; front-panel buttons give direct access to common functions instead of nested software menus.

DMM4050 or DMM4040

The two models share a datasheet. The DMM4050 is the one with temperature and capacitance measurement and the tighter DC specifications (the DMM4040 is a 6.5-digit meter with 0.0035 percent 10 V one-year accuracy by comparison). Ordering options are the power plug (A0 North America, A1 Universal Euro, A2 United Kingdom, A3 Australia, A5 Switzerland, A6 Japan, A10 China, A11 India, A12 Brazil, E1 Euro and UK cords) and services: single calibration CA1, five-year repair R5, standard warranty extended to five years SILV100.

Set-up notes

Allow a one-hour warm-up for full uncertainty specifications and observe the 400 mA continuous (550 mA for 2 minutes on, 1 minute off) limit on the mA range. Inputs beyond ±14 V on the DC volts ranges are clamped through about 200 kΩ, so do not rely on the meter as a protection device. The temperature function is valid only in 4-wire RTD mode with a platinum RT100 (385) probe and under 10 Ω lead resistance; probe accuracy must be added.

Calibration labs, training centres and repair benches

A 6.5-digit meter is used to check transmitter simulators, verify 4 to 20 mA loop calibrators, measure reference voltages and sort precision resistors. For a Gulf instrument workshop it gives a traceable-grade bench reference at moderate cost. It is a laboratory meter rated 0 to 55 °C and below 90 percent humidity; the datasheet gives no ingress rating or hazardous-area approval, so keep it in a clean, conditioned area.

Probes, cases and software

Recommended: TL710 premium test leads (supplied), TL705 2 x 4 wire precision lead, TL725 SMD test tweezers, TP750 100 Ω RTD probe (DMM4050 only), HCTEK4321 hard case, RMU2U rack shelf kit and NI LabVIEW SignalExpress Tektronix Edition. See the Portable Test and Measurement category.

Selection and installation notes

Test and measurement instruments are selected from the accuracy, the range and the interfaces the work needs. Allow the warm-up time, use leads and probes rated for the voltage and category of the circuit, keep the inputs inside the stated limits and keep the calibration current according to your quality system. Record the settings used for any test that must be repeated later.
