The Additel ADT295 is an Android-based field device communicator that configures, diagnoses and calibrates smart transmitters and valve positioners without carrying separate tools for each protocol. The base ADT295 handles HART, the ADT295-FF adds FOUNDATION Fieldbus and the ADT295-FF-PA also supports Profibus PA. Because it also measures and sources loop signals, one instrument can replace a communicator, a milliamp meter and a loop power supply on a typical commissioning round.

The 5 inch touchscreen is paired with eight function keys, and the datasheet states that it works with gloves, which matters on outdoor skids.

Communication, pressure and file handling

The datasheet describes online and offline operating modes: the communicator can talk to an installed device during operation, and it also supports calibration, testing and troubleshooting in instrument shops. Standard functions include DD menu navigation, parameter configuration, test methods, data trending, customizable hotkeys, favorites, configuration storage and offline simulation. Connecting one Additel ADT161 digital pressure module lets you read reference pressure while still talking to the transmitter, which suits comparative calibration of pressure transmitters. The ADT161 family spans vacuum to 60,000 psi (4,200 bar) and differential ranges as low as 1 inH2O.

Onboard storage of 64 GB can hold manuals, wiring diagrams, work instructions and calibration records, and Bluetooth transfer shares files between team members without a network. Libraries update over Wi-Fi at no charge, and Additel states that product and application support is included with every ADT295.

Which model to order

Select ADT295 if every smart device on site is HART, which is the case for most refinery and utility 4-20 mA loops. Choose ADT295-FF when you also service FOUNDATION Fieldbus segments, and ADT295-FF-PA when Profibus PA instruments are present. Check the DD list for your transmitter and valve controller makes before ordering, because device support depends on the DD library.

Use in the field

Typical work includes loop checks during commissioning, trimming a pressure or temperature transmitter, reading diagnostic alerts and changing ranges. The 24 V supply powers a bench-top transmitter while the measure channels read the returned loop current. Treat the loop supply and outputs as electrical sources and observe local permit-to-work rules in hazardous areas, since the datasheet does not list a hazardous-area rating.

Display and ruggedness details

The screen is covered in tempered glass and the datasheet calls it sunlight-readable, with adjustable backlighting and selectable light and dark themes. The USB port is electrically isolated from the measurement terminals, so the unit can be connected to a computer during field testing. The ports are protected against accidental 220 V contact, a useful safeguard when a technician moves quickly between junction boxes.

Where it fits in GCC plants

Instrument technicians in oil and gas, petrochemical, water treatment and power plants spend much of their time with smart transmitters. A glove-friendly, IP54 communicator with a long battery suits hot, dusty shifts and long turnaround days.

Before ordering, list the transmitter and valve controller makes you service so that the DD library coverage can be checked, and state whether the optional 10000 mAh battery or an ADT161 pressure module is wanted. Ask for the model with the fieldbus protocols that match your plant.

Selection and installation notes

A communicator is used in the field, so check that the battery is charged, the protocol option you need is fitted, the correct device description files are loaded and the loop has the resistance the protocol requires. Connect across the loop as shown in the manual, take care in hazardous areas to use only approved instruments, and save the configuration of each device so that a replacement can be set up again quickly.
