Current ratings of the ACS380-042S-12A6-4

The catalogue gives three current figures for this type: 11 A in light-overload use, 7.6 A in heavy-duty use and 13.7 A as the maximum output current. The overload definitions are 110% for 60 seconds every ten minutes (light) and 150% for 60 seconds every ten minutes (heavy). UL rating on the ABB page: 7.5 Hp, 11 A at 480 V. Start from the motor nameplate current rather than the kilowatt figure.

Upstream you can use 25 A gG, 50 A gR or 25 A class T fuses. The UL input current is 17.6 A, and the Type E manual motor protector named is MS165-20. Heat loss is 183 W (624 BTU/h); note that air flow 63 m3/h (37 ft3/min), maximum sound level 59 dBA.

Braking needs no add-on module because the chopper is part of the drive. Choose a resistor between 32 and 76 ohm; the rating is 5 Hp continuous and 8 kW maximum. The same firmware includes brake sequence control for holding brakes and supports induction and permanent magnet motors.

Reading the ordering code

Read ACS380-042S-12A6-4 as series ACS380, construction 04 (module), EMC digit 2, connectivity letter S, size 12A6 and voltage code 4. S means a BMIO-01 I/O and Modbus module is fitted; N means no module; C means a configured variant with a module chosen by plus code. ABB’s examples of configured-variant options are +K475 for FENA-21 PROFINET IO, +K490 for FEIP-21 EtherNet/IP, +K491 for FMBT-21 Modbus/TCP.

Ambient limits are -10 to +50 degrees C (60 with derating on frames R1 to R4) and 5 to 95% humidity without condensation. Altitude is 0 to 4000 m for 400 V units and 0 to 2000 m for 200 V units, with derating above 1000 m. Motor cables up to 150 m are allowed without external chokes.

About brand

ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive

ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.

Where ABB products are used

In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.
