Lovato DCRG8F Dynamic Power Factor Controller, 8 Static Steps
Description
Power factor control for capacitor banks
The DCRG8F is a dynamic power factor controller from Lovato Electric with 8 static steps and a graphic display. Static switching means the capacitor steps are switched by thyristor modules (the DCTL series) instead of contactors, so the bank can follow rapidly changing loads such as welders, cranes and presses without the delay of contactor switching.
Compared with the contactor-based DCRG8 it has three current inputs, master-slave operation, four-quadrant operation, analog outputs and many communication options listed in the table (USB, RS232, RS485, Ethernet, Profibus-DP, GSM/GPRS modem).

Selecting the controller
Choose the dynamic version when the load changes faster than a contactor bank can respond. For stable loads the standard DCRG8 controller is simpler and cheaper.
Static switching needs matching thyristor modules, such as the DCTLA series; the module ratings (kvar at the bank voltage) must match the capacitor steps.
Applications and installation
Typical use is a plant cubicle with an incomer current transformer, capacitor contactors and detuning reactors where required. Set the target power factor, step sizes and CT ratio during commissioning; the controller then adapts the number of active steps to the load.
The controller mounts in a panel cut-out; relay or static outputs drive the step contactors or thyristor modules.

Lovato order codes describe the product. On a contactor such as BF0910A230, "BF09" is the frame and rated current (9 A in AC-3), "10" is the built-in auxiliary contact (one normally open), "A" means an AC coil and "230" is the coil voltage. The coil voltage must match the control circuit exactly, so it is the most common detail to check when replacing one. For motors, a soft starter limits the inrush current at start and stop, while a variable speed drive controls the speed continuously and saves energy on pumps and fans that do not need full flow all the time.
Where Lovato products are used
In Oman and the GCC, Lovato components are built into motor control centres, pump and HVAC panels, capacitor banks for power factor correction, generator and ATS panels, and machine control panels for industry, water and buildings.
