EV220B 80: a flanged DN 80 piston valve for water mains and cooling circuits

Danfoss 016D6080 is the 80 mm EV220B with a cast-iron flanged body to EN 1092-1. It belongs to the EV220B 65 to 100 group, where the main valve is operated by a piston instead of a diaphragm, and where the housing is cast iron instead of brass. The Kv value is 75 m3/h (Cv 87), enough for a cooling-water header or a fill line of a tank farm.

The valve is normally closed. It operates between 0.25 and 10 bar of differential pressure, has a 15 bar test pressure and carries EPDM seals for water and brine up to 90 C. A single coil on the pilot circuit controls the large main flow.

Mounting and water quality

The installation guide gives the required straight pipe on both sides of the valve and asks that the inside diameter of the connecting pipe match the orifice, to prevent closing problems from turbulent flow. At 25 kg the body needs support, and flanges and bolts are ordered separately as an accessory set.

The same guide gives water quality guidance: hardness 6 to 18 dH, conductivity 50 to 800 uS/cm, media temperature below 25 C for 24-hour service, a filter of at least 50 mesh, and a maintenance cycle every 6 to 12 months. Adopt these values or request the original text from the document.

Ordering notes

The coil is separate; the guide lists BB, BE, BG and BY coils and notes a different equalising orifice if water hammer is possible. Confirm voltage, medium temperature and flange standard (PN 10) before ordering, and note that closing needs about 15 seconds.

Stainless pipe flanges are common in water treatment plants, while the valve body is cast iron; if the system uses stainless or plastic piping, isolate the valve with suitable gaskets and check corrosion compatibility of the fasteners. Make sure the stated 66 mm height H1 and 200 mm height H2 from the guide fit into the available space above the pipe, together with the coil.

Commissioning should include a slow pressurisation of the line, a check that the valve opens fully at the lowest expected pressure difference, and a record of the closing time. Both checks are quick and give a baseline for later troubleshooting when the piston or the pilot orifice begins to clog.

Keep the data sheet, a photograph of the nameplate and the order code 016D6080 together in the plant record. The same family contains many similar codes that differ only in range, connection or options, and a clear record saves time when a spare is needed during a shutdown.
