Application notes

The block housing can be rotated so that the active face points in one of nine directions, and corner LEDs make the supply and switching state visible from a distance. That flexibility is useful on hinged covers, travelling carriages and crowded junction areas where a threaded barrel would be awkward to align. The wide 10 to 65 VDC supply range and the changeover output let one part cover both normally-open and normally-closed logic without ordering two variants.

Installation hint: tighten the housing nut only to the torque shown in the table, keep the active face clear of surrounding metal to the extent the mounting distances require, and route the cable away from welding and heavy motor feeders where practical. A sensor set too close to adjacent metal can switch earlier than the rated distance suggests.

Ordering code and what to confirm

Reading the code against the datasheet rows (a derived summary, not Turck’s own key): the leading BI corresponds to the mounting condition shown as Flush, the digits to the rated switching distance of 15 mm, the housing token to the design Rectangular, CP40, the output suffix to 4-wire, Complementary contact, PNP, and the last element to the connection Connector, M12 × 1. Ident number 1569021 identifies this exact variant in the Turck catalogue.

Please check the mounting condition (flush or non-flush) against the free zone around the sensor, NO or changeover) of your PLC input, the target material and gap, the supply voltage and output type (PNP or NPN, and the connector type and cable length before you place an order. The figures above follow the manufacturer datasheet, and any later datasheet revision from the maker takes precedence.

Key features of the BI15-CP40-VP4X2-H1141

  • 15 mm rated switching distance in flush mounting, a long range for a sensor that can be embedded in metal.
  • Complementary PNP output: one normally open and one normally closed signal from the same sensor, useful for plausibility checks in the PLC.
  • Wide 10…65 VDC supply range with full reverse polarity and wire-break protection, plus cyclic short-circuit protection.
  • Rotatable sensing head with the active face selectable in nine directions.
  • Glass-fibre reinforced PBT housing, flame-retardant to V0, rated IP67.
  • Green and yellow corner LEDs visible from several angles.

Selecting the sensor and target

The rated switching distance assumes a standard mild steel target of a defined size. Stainless steel, aluminium, brass and copper targets reduce the effective switching distance, so for non-ferrous targets the correction factors in the Turck datasheet should be applied before fixing the mounting gap. A practical rule is to set the target within the secured operating distance of 0.81 × Sn, which allows for temperature drift and manufacturing tolerance. If the target is smaller than the active face, the switching distance also reduces. Where a longer range is needed, a non-flush CP40 type can be considered, at the cost of a larger free zone around the active face. With a switching frequency of 0.15 kHz, the sensor is suited to positioning and presence detection rather than high-speed counting.

Installation and maintenance

  • Respect the mounting distances in the specification table when installing sensors side by side or opposite each other, to avoid mutual interference.
  • Mount on a rigid bracket so vibration does not change the gap to the target.
  • Use an M12 connector cable with a suitable jacket for the environment and route it with strain relief.
  • Keep metal chips and swarf from collecting on the active face, as they can cause false switching.
  • When replacing, rotate the head to the same orientation as the old sensor before tightening.

Applications in Oman and GCC plants

Rectangular inductive sensors of this size are used for valve position feedback, crane and hoist limits, conveyor and chain monitoring, door position on machinery, and detection of steel parts on handling equipment. In ports, cement plants, steel works and material handling sites in the region, the longer switching distance gives more tolerance to mechanical wear and misalignment than smaller cylindrical sensors. The -25…+70 °C ambient range covers most indoor and shaded outdoor installations, but sensors exposed to direct sunlight on metal structures should be shaded because surface temperatures can rise well above the air temperature.

What to include in your RFQ

  • Type BI15-CP40-VP4X2-H1141 or ident number 1569021, and quantity.
  • Matching M12 connection cables, with length and cable jacket material.
  • Mounting brackets if required.
  • Target material and size, if confirmation of switching distance is needed.

About brand

Turck is a German manufacturer of sensors, connectivity and fieldbus technology for factory and process automation, founded in 1965 and headquartered in Mülheim an der Ruhr. The family-owned group develops and manufactures sensors, connectors, interface technology and I/O systems.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Turck sensors and I/O devices for machine builders and maintenance teams in Oman and the GCC.

Turck product series

Most of the Turck products here are inductive proximity sensors: threaded M12, M18 and M30 barrels in flush (BI) and non-flush (NI) versions, uprated-range (U) sensors, rectangular CP40 and CP80 housings and BIM magnetic-field sensors for detecting pistons in pneumatic cylinders. The type code describes the sensor; in BI5-M18-AP6X-H1141, BI means flush mounting, 5 is the switching distance in mm, AP6X a three-wire PNP output and H1141 the M12 connector.

Turck also makes RU ultrasonic sensors, PS pressure, TS temperature and LS level sensors, FCI inline flow sensors, the CMVT vibration and temperature sensor for condition monitoring over IO-Link, and fieldbus and Ethernet I/O modules and communication components.

Where Turck sensors are used

Position detection on conveyors, packaging machines, presses and robotic cells; level, pressure and temperature monitoring on hydraulic units and process skids; and vibration monitoring on motors, pumps and fans.
