Normalab TOST Classic Oil Oxidation Stability Bath

Description

A configurable bath for turbine, hydraulic and circulating oil oxidation tests

The TOST Classic is a Normalab bath for oxidation characteristics of lubricating oils. Oxidation cells with oil, water and metal catalyst coils sit in a heated oil bath while oxygen or air passes through them for hundreds or thousands of hours, and the laboratory follows how the oil ages. Oils with strong oxidation inhibition last longer in the test, which is why turbine and hydraulic oil specifications rely on it.

Normalab lists ASTM D943, D2274, D2893, D4310, IP 157, IP 388, ISO 4263-1, -2 and -3 and ISO 12205 and related methods. They evaluate the oxidation stability of inhibited steam-turbine oils in the presence of oxygen, water, and copper and iron metals at elevated temperature, and are also used for hydraulic and circulating oils with a specific gravity less than that of water that contain rust and oxidation inhibitors.

Accessories chosen by test method

The TOST Classic is delivered with one ASTM 40C thermometer (P/N 11522, without certificate, calibration on request) and, as stated by Normalab, without flowmeter and glassware, so the user selects accessories for the method and gets a customised instrument. A digital thermometer is available on request.

Listed accessories are the flowmeter for 3 l/h air for ASTM D943, IP 157 and ISO 4263 (ref. 9416251), the flowmeter for 3 l/h oxygen for ASTM D2274, D4310 and ISO 12205 (ref. 9416252), the flowmeter for 10 l/h air for ASTM D2893 (ref. 9416253), the oxidation cell for ASTM D943, IP 157, ISO 4263 and ASTM D2893 (ref. 21696) and the oxidation cell for ASTM D2274, D4310 and ISO 12205 (ref. 21697). The web page also lists thermometers for the oxidation cell, syringes with sampling tube, and ready-to-use catalyst.

Selecting a TOST configuration

Start from the method. A laboratory running ASTM D943 needs the 3 l/h air flowmeters and the D943 cells, while one running D2274 or D4310 needs oxygen flowmeters and the matching cells. The number of simultaneous tests sets how many flowmeters and cells to buy, up to eight.

Before ordering, confirm the methods, the number of cells, the catalyst and syringes, the silicone oil for the 30 litre bath, the gas supply and regulator, and a 230 V, 16 A outlet. Oxidation tests are also used to compare candidate formulations and to monitor in-service oil condition against a baseline. Because these tests are long, plan for stable power and regular level checks. Related equipment is grouped under liquid analytical systems.

About brand

Normalab is a French manufacturer of laboratory instruments for petroleum product testing, established in 1963 and based in Valliquerville, Normandy. The company started out as glassblowers and still runs a glassblowing workshop. For more than 55 years it has designed and built test instruments that follow ASTM, ISO and IP methods, including its NPM 450, the fifth generation of its automated flash point testers.

Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Oman, lists Normalab spare parts: the 60606 circulation pump for the coolant circuit of the NDI 450 automatic distillation analyzer, and the 60448 thermal detection thermocouple. We source Normalab parts by their five-digit reference number.

Normalab instrument families

The manufacturer arranges its instruments by the property tested: flammability, volatility, viscosity, cold flow properties, cleanliness and purity, lubricants, and bitumen, wax and grease. Its glassware line supports the same tests. The methods referenced are ASTM, ISO and IP. Refinery and fuel quality laboratories in the GCC run these instruments daily, which is why the usual request is for a replacement part rather than a complete instrument.

Ordering Normalab parts: what we need

Send the Normalab reference number of the part, the instrument model and its serial number, and a photo of the instrument nameplate. Where the part is a sensor or pump, a photo of the old item with its connector helps the manufacturer confirm the version fitted to your serial number. If you need a complete instrument, name the test method and the products you test.
