Brand:

Watson Smith Manostat Manually Operated Precision Pressure Regulator

Description

A precision regulator for critical, dead-end pressure control

The Watson Smith Manostat manually operated series is a precision pressure regulator for critical pressure control applications. The datasheet says it has shown outstanding reliability in thousands of applications worldwide, is suitable for dead-end (closed load) conditions and can be supplied alone or with a visual display dial. The example given is controlling the vertical pressure between a pantograph and the overhead cable on railways and trams, which needs fast operation at high flow and stability over a wide temperature range.

Advantages listed are reliable, durable construction, precise regulation, excellent setting sensitivity, high relief and a versatile design. We found this datasheet only as a copy issued as Watson Smith Instrumentation literature (dated 10/06) and hosted by a UK instrument supplier; we did not find the product in current manufacturer literature, so treat it as an older, legacy line and confirm current availability, any replacement model and lead time before you rely on it.

Model types and order codes

The handwheel manostat is the basic unit with a pressure adjusting handwheel and integral mounting nut. The dial manostat adds a 4 inch gauge for manual pressure loading, the DIN manostat uses a DIN standard gauge and the DMW is the weatherproof dial version with a 100 mm gauge, ports on the lower face and a polycarbonate case to IP55 with yoke for 50 mm posts. A volume boosting air relay with manual bias gives remote control of regulated pressures with little air use and a bias of up to 2 bar (30 psig).

Handwheel order codes are 100200R (0.14 to 1.7 bar, 2 to 25 psig), 100300R (0.14 to 4 bar, 2 to 60 psig) and 100400R (0.14 to 8 bar, 2 to 120 psig). Manual bias relay codes are 220100R (0.2 to 1 bar) and 220400R (0.14 to 8 bar). Dial, DIN and DMW versions use codes such as 300100R, 301300R, 301400R, 309100R, 320100R and 321400R. A captured bleed version for natural gas, a reduction gearbox and special scales are available to special order.

What to confirm before ordering

Check the output range, the version (handwheel, dial, DIN, DMW or relay), the supply pressure (at least 0.2 bar above the output, up to 10 bar), the air quality (oil-free dry air filtered below 25 micron) and the port thread, which is 1/4 NPT female as standard. A small pressure below 2 psig will always show at the bottom of the dial scale because of the servo action of the regulator. Because this is an older datasheet, confirm availability and any current replacement model.

About brand

Watson Smith is a pneumatic instrumentation brand from Leeds, England, covering current-to-pressure (I/P) converters, pressure-to-current (P/I) transmitters, Manostat precision regulators and test instruments. Its datasheets are issued by Norgren, and several series remain in current Norgren literature while others are only documented in older datasheets. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, lists Watson Smith instruments for pneumatic control loops in Oman and the GCC.

Watson Smith instruments

The 100X and 101X series and the 422 I.S. and 140 failsafe types convert a 4 to 20 mA signal into a pneumatic output, with intrinsically safe and flameproof versions in the 422 and 140. The Type 68 and Type 71 turn pneumatic pressure into 4 to 20 mA. Manostat regulators, loading stations, the Type 300D digital pressure meter and the FRI-30 air flow controller complete the range we list.

Current and older lines

Each product page states which datasheet it is based on and its date. Where we only found an older datasheet we say so and ask you to confirm availability before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Manostat?
A Watson Smith precision pressure regulator with high sensitivity and high relief, suited to dead-end applications and critical pressure control.
What versions does the datasheet list?
Handwheel, dial, DIN and weatherproof dial (DMW) manostats, plus a volume boosting air relay with manual bias.
What outlet range can I choose?
0.14 to 1.7, 0.14 to 4 or 0.14 to 8 bar (2 to 25, 60 or 120 psig) on the handwheel models.
Why does the dial show a small pressure at zero?
The datasheet explains that a small pressure below 2 psig appears at the low end of the dial because of the regulator servo operation.
Is this product still current?
We only found a 2006 datasheet, so confirm availability and any replacement model before ordering.
