Hanna HI9829 Multiparameter Water Quality Meter

Description

A field multiparameter system for lakes, rivers, seawater and effluent

The HI9829 is a portable logging multiparameter system that monitors up to 14 water-quality parameters, seven measured and seven calculated. A microprocessor-based multisensor probe measures pH, ORP, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, chloride, nitrate, ammonium and temperature, and the meter records them together. Hanna designed the system for field measurements of lakes, rivers and the sea, and the manual describes the sample environment as fresh, brackish or seawater.

The meter meets IP67 (30 minutes at 1 m depth) and the probe meets IP68 for continuous immersion. A model with a built-in 12-channel GPS receiver, the HI98290, is listed in the same manual and adds position tracking with a stated accuracy of 10 m.

Sensors, tracking and data handling

Every sensor is field-replaceable and carries a colour-coded cap, and the probe and sensors are recognised automatically. Calibration is automatic: five pH buffers, six conductivity standards, 0 and 100 % for oxygen, and 0, 20 and 200 FNU for turbidity, with the last five calibrations stored for GLP records. A measurement check helps the operator avoid erroneous readings, and auto-ranging applies to EC, ISE and turbidity.

The Fast Tracker Tag ID System uses iButton tags installed at sampling sites so that each reading is linked to a location, with up to 100 tags stored in the meter. Graphical display of logged data is available on the meter, and the USB interface moves records to a PC.

Specifying the system, and what to confirm

This is a configurable system. Meters, probes, sensors and accessories can be ordered in predefined configurations or individually, so the first decision is which sensors the monitoring programme needs, then the cable length, then standard or logging probe. For groundwater, tank or lake profiling where the probe should record autonomously, choose the logging probe; for spot checks, the standard probe is sufficient.

Confirm the pH/ORP, conductivity/turbidity, DO and ISE sensor codes with the supplier, the calibration standards required for turbidity and ISE work, and whether the GPS version is needed. Battery life depends on the configuration: Hanna quotes 280 hours with alkaline cells and no GPS for pH, ORP, DO and EC, falling to 190 hours when turbidity is also enabled.

How the Hanna HI9829 works

The multisensor probe goes into the water and each sensor reads its own parameter. The probe sends the readings to the meter. The meter shows them on the display and can log them with a time stamp. Calculated values such as salinity come from the measured values.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes for the HI9829

Fit the sensors into the probe and connect the probe to the meter. Calibrate the sensors with fresh solutions before the field trip. Rinse the probe after each use. Store the sensors as the manual describes. Replace the batteries when the display shows a low level.
