Overview

The SKF TLSD series, part of the SKF SYSTEM 24 range, is a family of electro-mechanical single point automatic lubricators that deliver a set quantity of grease or oil to one lubrication point over a chosen period. SKF presents it as the first choice when a simple and reliable automatic lubricator is needed under variable temperatures, or when vibration, limited space or a hazardous location calls for remote mounting. Each complete unit is supplied ready to use, with the drive unit, battery pack, filled lubricant cartridge and matching support plate, so maintenance teams can fit it and start lubricating immediately.

Operating Principle

The drive unit, designated TLSD 1-DS, contains an electric motor and a time setting wheel. When activated, the motor drives a piston that pushes lubricant out of the transparent cartridge at a controlled rate. The user selects an emptying time of 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10 or 12 months, and a switch sets the unit for either the 125 ml or the 250 ml cartridge, so the same drive unit serves both sizes. SKF states a maximum discharge pressure of 5 bar over the whole dispensing period, which keeps output steady as the cartridge empties.

Because the mechanism is electro-mechanical rather than gas-driven, the SKF TLSD dispense rate does not depend on ambient temperature. As general engineering background, that independence is valuable in climates like Oman, where equipment sees large day-night and seasonal temperature swings that would change the output of a chemically driven lubricator. Dual traffic-light LEDs, visible from all sides, report status: green when operating correctly, yellow as a pre-warning, and red when the lubricator has stopped. SKF DialSet software helps calculate the correct dispense rate for a given bearing.

Engineering Design of the SKF TLSD

An SKF TLSD lubricator is built from three parts: the drive unit, a replaceable cartridge holding 125 ml or 250 ml of SKF grease or oil, and a support plate. The TLSD 1-SP support plate is used for grease, while the TLSD 1-SPV includes an integrated non-return valve for oil lubrication. The connection thread is G 1/4, and remote mounting is possible with feed lines of up to 3 m for grease and up to 5 m for oil, depending on ambient temperature, grease type and back pressure. The assembled unit is rated IP 65, and the ambient range with the standard TLSD 1-BAT alkaline battery is 0 to 50 °C.

Each SKF TLSD cartridge set includes a fresh 4.5 V, 2.7 Ah alkaline battery pack, so the power source is renewed every time the lubricant is replaced; a lithium TLSD 1-BATC pack is available for low ambient temperatures. Dispense rates range from 0.3 to 4.1 ml per day for the 125 ml version and 0.7 to 8.3 ml per day for the 250 ml version. For machines that do not run continuously, SKF also offers the cabled TLSD 1-DK drive unit, which takes power directly from the machine control panel and sends status signals to the PLC.
