SKF TKBA 40 Laser Belt Alignment Tool

Description

Overview

The SKF TKBA 40 is a laser-based belt alignment tool designed to align the grooves of V-belt pulleys quickly and accurately. Belt drives that run misaligned wear out belts and pulleys early, generate extra vibration and waste energy, and SKF developed the TKBA 40 to correct vertical angle, horizontal angle and parallel misalignment in a single, simple procedure. The tool consists of a laser emitting unit and a receiver unit that attach magnetically to the pulley grooves using V-guides, so a technician can set it up in moments without special fixtures.

Seven Star LLC supplies the SKF TKBA 40 to maintenance departments, contractors and OEM service teams in Oman and the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. For plants that run hundreds of belt-driven fans, pumps and compressors, a dedicated belt alignment tool is one of the simplest ways to cut unplanned belt changes and lower energy use, and our team can advise on how it fits into a wider precision maintenance programme.

Operating Principle

The emitter unit projects a red laser line across the drive onto the receiver unit mounted on the opposite pulley. The receiver has a three-dimensional target area with three reference lines, and the position and tilt of the laser line against those references show both the type and the direction of misalignment. According to the SKF leaflet, alignment is achieved when the laser line coincides with the three reference lines on the receiver unit. Because the operator sees the result directly on the target, the SKF TKBA 40 allows the motor to be moved while watching the line, and tension and alignment can be adjusted at the same time.

A key point of the method is that the SKF TKBA 40 aligns the pulley grooves rather than the pulley faces. As a general engineering note, face-based methods with a straight edge or string can give false results when pulleys have different widths or face designs, because the belt actually runs in the grooves. Referencing the grooves through V-guides gives optimum alignment even for pulleys of dissimilar width or face profile, and SKF quotes an angular accuracy better than 0.2° and an offset accuracy better than 0.5 mm.

Engineering Design of the SKF TKBA 40

Both SKF TKBA 40 units are housed in aluminium: the emitter in extruded aluminium measuring 70 × 74 × 61 mm and weighing 320 g, and the receiver measuring 96 × 74 × 61 mm and weighing 270 g. The emitter uses one built-in class 2 red laser diode of less than 1 mW at 632 nm, producing a laser line 3 m long at a distance of 2 m. Measurement distance runs from 50 mm up to 6 000 mm, which covers most industrial belt drives. The units mount magnetically into the pulley groove, and an optional TMEB A2 side adapter allows the alignment of multi-ribbed and timing belt pulleys as well as sprockets.

Four sizes of V-guide are supplied with the SKF TKBA 40, three pairs of each: 22 mm with short and long rods and 40 mm with short and long rods, so the tool fits most groove widths and types. Exchanging a V-guide is a straightforward operation. Power comes from two AAA alkaline batteries that give about 20 hours of continuous operation, the operating temperature range is 0 to 40 °C and the units are rated IP 40. The kit ships in a carrying case of 260 × 85 × 180 mm with a total weight of 1.2 kg, together with printed instructions and a calibration certificate valid for two years.

Key Features

SKF highlights the following benefits of the SKF TKBA 40 for everyday maintenance work.

  • Powerful magnets give fast and easy attachment to the pulley without tools or brackets.
  • Groove-based alignment gives correct results even when pulleys differ in width or face design.
  • All three misalignment types, vertical angle, horizontal angle and parallel offset, are visible on one three-dimensional target.
  • Tension and alignment can be adjusted simultaneously while watching the laser line.
  • Four V-guide sizes are supplied so a wide range of V-belt pulleys can be aligned from the same kit.
  • A maximum operating distance of 6 m accommodates long drives on large fans and conveyors.
  • An optional side adapter extends use to multi-ribbed belts, timing belts and sprockets.
  • Two AAA batteries provide about 20 hours of continuous use, and the kit includes a two-year calibration certificate.

Industrial Applications

SKF lists HVAC, pump installations, paper mills, flour mills, lathes, milling machines and conveyors for belt drives, and agricultural machinery, compressors and engine camshafts for sprocket drives. In Oman the most common use is on the large number of belt-driven air handling units and cooling tower fans found in hospitals, malls, hotels and district cooling plants around Muscat, where poor alignment shows up quickly as belt dust, squeal and frequent replacements. The SKF TKBA 40 also suits belt-driven pumps and blowers at wastewater treatment plants, and compressors and conveyors in cement, flour and food plants in Sohar, Nizwa and Salalah.

Seven Star LLC supplies the SKF TKBA 40 alongside other precision maintenance tools, so a maintenance team can cover both belt and coupled drives with one supplier. Direct-coupled machines can be aligned with the SKF TKSA 41 laser shaft alignment tool, and the results of either job can be verified with a vibration route using the SKF Microlog Analyzer AX. Where motors are being rebuilt, standard bearings such as the SKF 6206-2RS1 deep groove ball bearing complete the picture of a properly maintained drive.

About brand
SKF, founded in 1907 in Gothenburg, Sweden, is best known for rolling bearings, seals and lubrication systems, and it also makes the tools maintenance crews use to mount, align and monitor rotating equipment. Seven Star LLC lists SKF bearings, maintenance tools and condition monitoring instruments and supplies them by full designation to plants and workshops in Oman.

SKF bearings and maintenance tools listed here

Four items show the spread of the range: the 6206-2RS1 deep groove ball bearing with rubber seals on both sides, the TIH 030m induction heater for mounting bearings, the TKSA 41 laser shaft alignment tool, and the Microlog Analyzer AX (CMXA 80) vibration data collector. Other SKF bearings can be quoted from the full designation.

Ordering SKF bearings and tools: what we need

An SKF bearing designation is read in three parts: the basic number, then suffixes for seals or shields, cage, clearance and tolerance. Send it complete, for example 6206-2RS1/C3, because the suffixes change the part. For tools and instruments, send the model designation and say which accessories or kits you need. If markings are worn off, give us bore, outside diameter and width in millimeters. We answer SKF spare parts inquiries from all GCC countries.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of misalignment can the SKF TKBA 40 correct?
The SKF TKBA 40 detects and helps correct vertical angle misalignment, horizontal angle misalignment and parallel offset. All three are visible on the receiver's three-dimensional target, and alignment is achieved when the laser line coincides with the three reference lines.
Why does the tool align pulley grooves instead of faces?
The belt runs in the grooves, so aligning the grooves gives the correct result even when pulleys have different widths or face designs. The TKBA 40 uses V-guides that sit in the grooves, which avoids the errors that face-based methods can introduce.
Can the SKF TKBA 40 be used on timing belts and sprockets?
Yes, with the optional TMEB A2 side adapter, which allows alignment of multi-ribbed and timing belt pulleys as well as sprockets. Without the adapter the tool is intended for V-belt pulleys.
How accurate is the TKBA 40 and how long do the batteries last?
SKF specifies angular accuracy better than 0.2 degrees and offset accuracy better than 0.5 mm over a measuring distance of 50 mm to 6 m. Two AAA alkaline batteries give about 20 hours of continuous operation.
Is the SKF TKBA 40 available from Seven Star LLC in Oman?
Yes. Seven Star LLC supplies the SKF TKBA 40 to customers in Oman and the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. Send an RFQ with your quantity and any accessories required and we will prepare a quotation.
