LongTeng ER80S-G High Strength Solid MIG Welding Wire
LongTeng ER80S-G for higher strength and weathering steel
LongTeng ER80S-G is the strength step on page 7 of the manufacturer’s catalogue. The datasheet describes it as suitable for welding 550 MPa high strength weathering steel, with vehicles, offshore projects and bridges named as examples. It is the only grade in this group with deliberate nickel, chromium and copper additions listed in its analysis, which is what separates a weathering-steel wire from the plain carbon steel grades.
The catalogue prints an AWS line for this entry that we do not repeat, because the standard cited there does not appear to cover an 80 ksi low-alloy wire, so the ER80S-G name and the lot certificate are used as the reference. Seven Star LLC supplies the wire from Muscat for structural and marine fabrication customers in Oman and the GCC.
The class designation in general terms
General class information: the number 80 indicates a minimum tensile strength of 80 ksi, roughly 550 MPa, in the as-welded condition, and the G suffix means that the composition is not locked to a fixed band. The buyer relies on the data sheet and the test certificate to see exactly which alloying elements are present.
That makes a certificate request especially important for this grade. Corrosion-resistance requirements, matching to weathering plate grades and impact requirements all depend on chemistry that can vary slightly from lot to lot.

Understanding the alloy additions
General class information: nickel, chromium and copper in the range of a few tenths of a percent are the classic additions to wires for weathering steels, because they allow the weld metal to form a protective patina similar to the plate. Here the catalogue lists nickel at 0.33, chromium at 0.48 and copper at 0.3 percent, with silicon of 0.46 and manganese of 1.4 percent, low sulphur of 0.008 percent and carbon of 0.057 percent.
Strength is above the plain carbon wires on the same pages: 590 MPa tensile and 495 MPa yield, with 28 percent elongation and impact energy between 112 and 120 joules at minus 40 degrees Celsius. All are typical values rather than guaranteed minimums.
Shielding gas and welding window
For LongTeng ER80S-G the manufacturer lists CO2 or an argon and CO2 mixture with 5 to 20 percent CO2. DC electrode positive current windows per diameter are shown below:
| Wire diameter (mm) | Gas flow rate (L/min) | Current (A), DC+ |
|---|---|---|
| 0.8 | 15 | 50–100 |
| 1.0 | 15–20 | 50–220 |
| 1.2 | 15–25 | 80–350 |
| 1.6 | 20–25 | 170–550 |
General guidance: a mixed gas preserves alloy elements better than straight CO2 and tends to give a cleaner bead, which is why it is often preferred for visible weathering steel structures. Preheat and interpass limits come from the base steel and the code, not from the wire.
Typical applications
The manufacturer names vehicles, offshore projects and bridges. Regional equivalents include coastal platforms and walkways exposed to salt air, bridge and road furniture steel, lifting equipment and trailers, and structural steelwork on projects around Muscat, Duqm and Salalah. In every case the governing code and the welding procedure decide whether this wire is accepted.
Shops that also weld with the ESAB Rebel EMP 285ic on thin mild steel can keep LongTeng ER80S-G for the structural jobs that call for higher strength; see our solid welding wire category for the mild steel solid wires in the same family.
Packaging and ordering
The manufacturer’s package reference lists GMAW spools to EN ISO 544 in several formats: BS300 (steel, 15 kg), D270 (plastic, 15 kg), D300 (plastic, 15 kg), D200 (plastic, 5 kg) and D100 (plastic, 1 kg), each in corrugated cardboard outer packing. These are the manufacturer’s reference packages, not a statement of what is on our shelves; confirm the spool format and quantity you need when you send the enquiry.
Provide Seven Star LLC with the base steel grade, diameter, spool format and quantity of LongTeng ER80S-G you need. We confirm availability in writing and forward the datasheet extract. No approval is claimed for this grade on this page; ask for the lot test certificate when matching to weathering plate or to an end-user specification.
Welding practice for weathering steel
General guidance: when welding weathering steel, match the filler metal to the base plate and the exposure condition, keep heat input within the limits of the plate specification, and follow the required preheat for the thickness and carbon equivalent. Surfaces should be free of oil, paint and moisture along the joint, and weld spatter should be removed before any later coating or exposure.
LongTeng ER80S-G is described in the catalogue for 550 MPa weathering steel; whether it is acceptable on a given project depends on the plate grade, the code and the owner specification, which only your engineer can decide.
Quality paperwork for LongTeng ER80S-G
Ask for the lot test certificate for LongTeng ER80S-G. The chemistry, particularly the nickel, chromium and copper levels, and the impact results should be confirmed there before you rely on them for weathering performance or low-temperature toughness. Seven Star LLC includes the datasheet extract on this page and will forward the manufacturer paperwork for the lot supplied; no approval or classification society listing is claimed for this grade.
Choosing LongTeng ER80S-G against the carbon steel wires
The plain carbon steel wires on pages 5 to 7 are the better and cheaper choice for ordinary mild steel. LongTeng ER80S-G is the entry to consider when strength near 590 MPa tensile, a weathering-steel match or alloyed weld metal is needed. If the design only calls for 500 MPa structural steel, use a grade from the carbon steel group, and reserve LongTeng ER80S-G for the cases where the plate and the specification justify it.
Seven Star LLC works with fabricators, EPC contractors and marine and bridge contractors in Muscat, Sohar and Salalah, and answers enquiries for LongTeng ER80S-G together with shielding gas and feeding accessories on request. Questions about the wire, the datasheet extract or your welding procedure can be sent in the same message, and we reply with whatever the manufacturer documents confirm. Delivery to sites elsewhere in the GCC can be discussed once the quantity and diameter are known.
Marine and process packages that add grooved pipe connections, such as the Victaulic Style 107N QuickVic Rigid Coupling, can be enquired about at the same time.
