Brimstone™ Sulfur-Recovery Analyzer Systems

Description

Overview

The Brimstone™ Sulfur-Recovery Analyzer is a direct-coupled tail gas and pit gas analyzer for sulfur recovery units, monitoring H2S, SO2, COS, and CS2 while calculating air demand. Galvanic is well known as the leader in process analyzers used to optimize sulfur-recovery units, putting 25 years of applications know-how and engineering prowess into the rugged, user-friendly design of the UV-spectrophotometer-based Brimstone analyzer line.

Working closely with plant engineers in the region, Seven Star LLC proudly offers the Brimstone™ to sulfur recovery unit (SRU) operators, refineries, and gas processing facilities across the Sultanate of Oman, Muscat, and the wider GCC. As the only tail and pit gas analyzer combining these capabilities and features, the Brimstone™ provides unique, exceptional process analysis for sulfur-recovery operations across the region’s energy sector.

Measurement Principle

The Brimstone™ is a unique tail and pit gas analyzer capable of direct coupling to the process, providing the ability to control sulfur vapor removal more efficiently. Galvanic’s proprietary probe design eliminates plugging problems associated with heated transfer lines, while the analyzer uses Chemometrics to measure all four key components—H2S, SO2, CS2, and COS—simultaneously.

This Chemometric approach is superior to standard single-point analysis because it measures absorption at 256 points rather than a single wavelength, delivering enhanced CCD UV spectroscopy results that are extremely fast and accurate. The analyzer achieves ±1% of full scale accuracy, repeatability, and linearity for H2S and SO2, with a response time of just 10 seconds (T-90).

Engineering Design of the Brimstone™

The Brimstone™ is engineered for low-maintenance performance with no moving parts, freeing up operators to focus on other critical functions. Its condensing probe design reduces condensation in the process line to further reduce maintenance, while close-coupled installation delivers response times of 5 seconds or less due to reduced sample transport time.

A robust sample system handles very high sulfur vapor concentrations to reduce the risk of plugging, and the full UV spectrum analysis delivers superior performance compared with optical filter-based designs. The analyzer uses a non-consumable liquid that is replaceable for optimum performance, and a split oven and controller configuration option allows up to 5 meters of separation, simplifying analyzer replacement on existing sample lines. The Double Air Demand (DAD) feature reduces tail gas bypassing and protects the SRU from excursions.

Available Models

The Brimstone™ family includes a full line of analyzers designed to assure quality, efficiency, and compliance throughout the entire sulfur-recovery process:

  • Acid Gas Analyzer: Monitors H2S concentration in the acid gas feed to the sulfur-recovery unit, providing feed-forward control of the main air valve.
  • Tail Gas Analyzer: Monitors H2S, SO2, COS, and CS2 concentration in the SRU’s tail gas, providing feedback control of the trim air valve.
  • Sulfur Pit Analyzer: Monitors H2S and SO2 concentration in the vapor headspace of the sulfur pit, ensuring H2S concentration does not exceed the lower explosive limit and providing early warning of potential smoldering fires.

Measurement Ranges and Analytical Performance

Galvanic’s published specification sheet for the Brimstone™ lists dual measurement ranges for each component: H2S at 0–10% on the high range and 0–1% on the low range, SO2 at 0–5% and 0–0.5%, and COS and CS2 at 0–5% and 0–0.5% respectively. Accuracy, repeatability and linearity are stated as ±1% of full scale for H2S and SO2 and ±5% of full scale for COS and CS2, with zero drift held to ±1% of full scale through a periodic auto-zero cycle that compensates for optical and source ageing without operator intervention.

The measurement is UV spectrophotometric using a CCD detector, and the analyzer presents results on a colour LCD with an extendable keypad as well as through a web-based graphical interface, allowing engineers to review spectra and diagnostics from the control room rather than at the shelter. Named configurations within the family include the 943-TGX tail gas analyzer and the 202-SPX sulfur pit analyzer, with an amine liquid analyzer variant available for tail gas treating unit service.

Industrial Applications

The Brimstone™ is engineered for sulfur recovery units, refineries, and gas sweetening plants across Oman that require precise Claus process air demand control and sulfur pit safety monitoring. Its acid gas, tail gas, and sulfur pit analyzer models cover the full sulfur-recovery process chain, from inlet stream assessment through continuous emissions monitoring for environmental regulatory compliance.

With fast quotation turnaround and technical support, Seven Star LLC supports refineries, gas processing plants, and sulfur recovery unit operators throughout the Sohar and Salalah economic zones and the broader GCC region with the Brimstone™’s proven, low-maintenance sulfur-recovery process analysis.

Sample System, Utilities and Installation

The Brimstone™ sample interface is built around a condensing sample probe at a low-pressure steam-jacketed sample point, with steam supplied at roughly 3.4–3.8 bar to keep the nozzle and sample valve above the sulfur dewpoint and so minimise plugging. Fibre optics carry the optical signal, which removes the alignment problems associated with rigid optical benches, and custom probe connections are offered to suit the range of existing sample port sizes found on installed Claus trains.

Utility requirements are 100–240 VAC, 50/60 Hz at 800 W, instrument air at 3.8–8 bar and up to 623 L/min (22 SCFM) for the aspirator drive, with an optional nitrogen supply at around 25 L/min. Ambient rating is 0–60 °C at 0–95% relative humidity, non-condensing. Hazardous-area options cover North American Class I Division 2 Groups C and D or B, C and D T3, ATEX and IECEx Ex II 2 G IIC T3 Gb, and EAC Ex for Russia, and the split oven and controller arrangement is available in the ATEX and IECEx certified form for plants where the electronics must sit outside the immediate process area.
