KTR ROFLEX Fail-Safe Flexible Shaft Coupling

Description

Compact fail-safe jaw coupling with a short shaft distance

The KTR ROFLEX is a torsionally flexible, fail-safe shaft coupling built around a torsion damper made of elastomer. Its particular feature is the compact design with a short distance between shaft ends (DBSE), which allows space-saving power packs. KTR states that ROFLEX compensates axial, radial and angular displacement, damps shocks and reduces torsional vibration, and that it is approved for use in potentially explosive atmospheres under ATEX and EAC certification.

The values below come from KTR operating and assembly instructions KTR-N 49310 EN (edition 6) for type N and the split version type SH.

Type N or type SH

Type N is the standard two-hub coupling that is assembled by pushing the machines together. Type SH is the version KTR introduced with a split cam section produced by cracking, aimed at easy servicing; its data table lists the cap screws and tightening torques for the split parts, from 34 Nm to 560 Nm depending on size. In general engineering terms, a split design reduces the work of shifting a motor or driven unit when the damper has to be changed.

KTR states that the torque data refer to the torsion damper only. Shaft-hub connections are the user’s responsibility, and selection should follow DIN 740 part 2 or the KTR catalogue procedure. ROFLEX couplings with attachments that may generate heat, sparks or static charge, such as brake drums, torque limiters or fan impellers, are not permitted in explosive atmospheres without a separate analysis.

Alignment and use in explosive atmospheres

Alignment must keep axial, radial and angular displacement within the speed-dependent table, with only half of the values allowed in explosion group IIC. The ambient temperature range is -30 °C to +75 °C because of the damper material. KTR defines inspection intervals and wear limits for the torsion damper in the explosive-atmosphere enclosure of the instruction, and the damper has to be replaced when the limit is reached.

About brand

KTR is a German manufacturer of shaft couplings and related drive components, based in Rheine. The company was founded in 1959 and its products are used in machine building, pumps, power transmission, hydraulics and heavy industry. Seven Star LLC lists KTR coupling ranges with the technical data from the manufacturer operating and assembly instructions.

KTR product ranges

KTR couplings cover torsionally flexible jaw couplings such as ROTEX, curved-tooth gear couplings such as BoWex, steel laminae couplings, bellows couplings for servo drives, fail-safe shaft couplings and flange couplings for pump drives. KTR also makes clamping elements for keyless shaft-hub connections, along with brake systems and hydraulic components.

Because the instructions state values for rated torque, maximum torque, speed and shaft displacement, they help engineers compare coupling types and sizes before ordering, and they describe correct assembly and alignment as well.

Documents and quotation

Each KTR product page links to the manufacturer instruction with dimension tables, torque ratings and displacement data. Send the shaft sizes, torque, speed and operating conditions with your request, and Seven Star LLC will prepare a quotation from its base in Muscat, Oman.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the SH version change?
Type SH has a split cam section made by cracking and is aimed at easy servicing. Type N is the standard two-hub version that is assembled by sliding the hubs together.
What is the damper material?
Polyurethane for size 68 and Perbunan (NBR) from size 80, as listed in KTR-N 49310.
What is the torque range?
From 65 Nm rated torque at size 68 to 5,000 Nm at size 280.
Is ROFLEX approved for explosive atmospheres?
KTR states ATEX and EAC approval. The instruction gives temperature classes T5 and T6 and an ambient limit of +75 °C.
Why is the short DBSE useful?
It lets the driving and driven machines sit close together, which gives a compact power pack.
