Brand:

FIAMM SMG/S 660 2 V 660 Ah OPzV Gel Battery Cell

Description

SMG/S 660 is a 2 V maintenance-free gel cell from the FIAMM SMG/S range, an OPzV-type design for high cyclic use with renewable energy sources. The folder prints 660 Ah at the 120-hour rate to 1.85 volts per cell at 20 °C, in a 166 x 206 x 523 mm case weighing 39.6 kg.

A sealed gel OPzV cell for cyclic solar and off-grid storage

FIAMM builds the SMG/S with a tubular die-cast positive grid and a gelled electrolyte, which it says provides a wider operating temperature range. Separators of extremely high porosity allow frequent cyclic usage, and the cell is maintenance-free with low self-discharge, so it suits storage periods and off-float charging.

The folder lists 17 cells, from SMG/S 265 (265 Ah, 19.3 kg) up to SMG/S 4240, with SMG/S 2600 weighing 153 kg. SMG/S 660 is the type just below the 145 mm wide cell used for the 860 Ah size and has the same 523 mm height as the 460 and 570 Ah cells.

Construction and standards in the SMG/S folder

  • Tubular die-cast positive grid with GEL electrolyte; sealed and maintenance-free.
  • An ABS flame-retardant case classified UL94 V0 is available on request.
  • Can be installed horizontally in dedicated racks, which saves installation space.
  • Standards listed: IEC 61427, DIN 40742 OPzV, DIN 43539 part 5 deep discharge, IEC 60896 part 21 and Eurobat Long Life, 12 years and longer.
  • Eco-friendly, with all components fully recyclable at end of life.

Derived values (calculated here, not printed)

Parameter Specification
Energy at the C120 rating about 1.32 kWh per cell (2 V x 660 Ah)
24-cell 48 V string float voltage 24 x 2.25 = 54.0 V at 20 °C

SMG/S against the SMG standby gel range

SMG/S is rated at 120 hours to 1.85 V, SMG at 10 hours to 1.80 V. The nearest SMG cell by case is SMG 530 (7 OPzV 490, 530 Ah, 166 x 206 x 523 mm, 39 kg), so look at the discharge basis, not the jar, when you pick between them.

Next in the SMG/S ladder are SMG/S 570 (145 mm wide, 33.8 kg) and SMG/S 860 (698 mm tall, 49.2 kg).

Installation and charging notes from the GEL manual

Cells are normally installed vertically, but large SMG/S cells can lie horizontally on dedicated racks using handling straps. Lift only from underneath, torque M10 female posts to 20 to 25 Nm and keep 5 to 10 mm spacing for heat dissipation.

The manual says boost charging at 2.40 V per cell should be done yearly to prevent stratification and must end when current reaches 0.001 C10 or after 24 hours. Monitor float voltage at the battery terminals every six months and record cell voltages yearly.

Off-grid and hybrid storage in Oman

The folder tags renewable energy storage. Gel cells are common in unmanned solar sites since they need no topping-up. General engineering note: the manual says operation above 20 °C reduces life, and recommended float voltage should be temperature compensated by minus 2.5 mV per cell per degree, which a solar charge controller must support.

Battery room and maintenance notes

Solar and hybrid systems in the region, such as remote telecom sites, farms, water pumping stations and off-grid buildings, need batteries that accept daily cycling with little maintenance. Gel cells do not need topping up, which is an advantage at remote sites. Size the battery bank from the daily energy use, the number of days of autonomy and the allowed depth of discharge, using the 120-hour rating given in the folder.

Make sure the charge controller or inverter uses the charging voltages and temperature compensation given in the manual, because overcharging dries out gel cells and shortens life. High temperatures also shorten battery life, so shade and ventilate the battery room or enclosure. Torque the connections to the stated values, recheck them after the first months, and record cell voltages during routine maintenance.

Keep a record of the installation date and all readings, so trends and weak cells can be seen early and replacements planned in good time.
