Proceq Pundit PI8000 Pile Integrity and Impact Echo Tester

Description

One wireless sensor for pile integrity and impact echo testing

The Pundit PI8000 combines low-strain impact integrity testing of deep foundations with impact echo testing of concrete elements. A hand-held sensor of 85 x 56 x 59 mm and 144 g with battery records the response to a hammer blow or a small impactor, sends it over Bluetooth Low Energy to an iPad, and the Pundit Impact app plots acceleration, velocity and frequency views.

For pile integrity the sensor is pressed on the pile head with coupling putty and struck with the hammer, and the reflection from the toe or from a defect shows the length and the major anomalies. For impact echo a small steel impactor excites the member and the frequency peak gives the thickness or the depth of a void or delamination. The manual covers cast-in-place and driven piles and lists the standards ASTM C1383, ASTM D5882, DGZfP Merkblatt B11 and RI-ZFP-TU.

Installation and operating notes

A software licence is needed to use the Pundit Impact app. The manual describes a Pro licence with pile integrity, impact echo grid and spot scan, auto toe detection and cloud options.

The attainable pile length depends on the soil. For very long, large-diameter piles the product page warns that the toe reflection can be hard to see and a bigger hammer than the one in the kit may be needed.

Impact monitoring lets the operator exclude or include single blows, and automatic gain settings are provided. Filter settings can be applied to all piles together so that a whole site is compared on one screen. The sensor runs on a removable AA cell for about 8 hours and charges over USB-C.

For impact echo, the back wall is normally clear in elements up to 60 cm, and some cases reach further depending on concrete quality and the impactor size selected.

Foundation and structural checks

Pile integrity tests are run on cast-in-place and driven piles to compare many piles on one site quickly and flag the ones with necks, cracks or unexpected length. Impact echo covers slabs, walls and pavements where only one side is accessible.

Low-strain testing finds major defects only and gives no load capacity. Interpretation belongs to a qualified engineer. General guidance only.

At 144 g the sensor unit is light enough to place against a pile head or a wall during a test. Results are viewed in the Pundit Impact app and saved to the Screening Eagle Workspace platform, where colleagues off site can see them and an HTML report can be generated.

Calibration and field notes

Pile integrity testing is used in the region on bored and driven piles for buildings, bridges and infrastructure, where piles are tested after construction to find defects before the structure is built. The pile head must be prepared as described in the manual, with sound concrete exposed and a clean, flat surface for the sensor and hammer blows. Impact echo testing is used to measure the thickness of slabs and walls and to find voids and delaminations.

Record pile lengths and site details carefully, as the interpretation depends on them. Charge the sensor before site work, keep the instrument out of direct sun in summer, and check its operation at regular intervals as described in the manual.

Confirm unclear results with other methods where needed, and store the sensor and hammer in their case after use.

Keep a spare battery charged for long site days, especially when many piles are tested.

About brand

Proceq is a Swiss brand of portable non-destructive testing instruments, founded on 8 April 1954 in Zurich by Antonio Brandestini; the name comes from 'processes' and 'equipment'. Its first product was the Original Schmidt concrete test hammer, and in 1975 the Leeb rebound hardness method was invented at Proceq, giving rise to the Equotip hardness testers. In 2019 Proceq merged with Singapore's Dreamlab to form Screening Eagle Technologies, where Proceq continues as a brand.

Instruments for concrete and structure assessment

Proceq documentation describes uses such as estimating concrete strength with rebound hammers, mapping rebar cover, testing pile integrity, finding voids and delaminations with ultrasound, measuring concrete resistivity and checking coating adhesion. Many current instruments pair a sensor with an iPad or smartphone app, and the datasheets state ranges, accuracy and applicable standards such as EN 12504 and ASTM C1383.
