Raychem Elexant 4010i-SSR-FW Heat-Trace Controller

Description

4010i-SSR-FW (catalog number 10380-002) is the Raychem Elexant 4010i single-point heat-tracing controller in a fibre-reinforced plastic enclosure with window, switching one circuit through a 2-pole 32 A, 277 V solid-state relay. It is approved for nonhazardous and Class I Div. 2 / Zone 2 locations.

A touch-screen controller and ground-fault protector for one heat-trace circuit

The Elexant 4010i controls and monitors electric heat tracing for freeze protection and process temperature maintenance. It measures up to three directly connected temperature sensors, accepts 4-20 mA inputs for thermocouple converters, and offers line sensing, ambient sensing, proportional ambient sensing control (PASC) and power-limiting modes. The SSR versions add proportional control as well as on/off.

Ground-fault sensing, alarm and trip are built in with automated self-tests, so circuits with a 4010i need no separate ground-fault device, according to the datasheet. The color touch screen holds settings in nonvolatile memory, and RS-485 Modbus RTU and Ethernet Modbus/TCP ports let it join a DCS or the Raychem Supervisor software.

Features stated in the datasheet

  • Three temperature inputs (100 ohm platinum, nickel-iron or nickel RTD; 4-20 mA) and two digital inputs.
  • Alarms for temperature, current, voltage, resistance, ground fault, RTD failure and relay failure; programmable Form-C alarm relay.
  • Soft-start, SSR overcurrent protection and nuisance-trip prevention; load shedding for up to 8 zones with Supervisor.
  • Five interface languages and USB configuration save and firmware update.

Choosing the 4010i variant

Eight complete units are listed: EMR (electromechanical relay, nonhazardous only) and SSR versions, each in FRP (-FW) or stainless steel 304 (-SW), with or without intrinsically safe RTD barriers (-IS). Catalog numbers run 10380-001 to 10380-008: 4010i-EMR-FW 001, -SSR-FW 002, -EMR-SW 003, -SSR-SW 004, -EMR-IS-FW 005, -SSR-IS-FW 006, -EMR-IS-SW 007, -SSR-IS-SW 008.

Choose SSR where the controller will sit in Zone 2 or where proportional control is wanted, and choose -IS only if RTD wiring passes through Zone 0 or RTDs sit in Zone 1. The stainless enclosure is IP66; the FRP is IP64.

Installation and wiring notes

The installation instructions H59271 advise mounting the SSR version on channel strut to maximize heat sink ventilation, with 1/4 in x 2 in bolts or M6 x 50 mm. Power connects to TB4, the 3-wire RTDs to TB1, 4-20 mA to TB2 and the alarm relay to TB3, with shields to the field terminal block on the mounting plate. Disconnect live voltage before opening.

The alarm relay is fail-safe, energized in the normal state. Sensor accessories in the datasheet include RTD10CS, RTD-200, RTD7AL and RTD4AL.

Where it is used

General engineering note: a single-circuit controller like this suits individual pipelines, tank lines and instrument impulse lines in oil, gas and chemical plants where each circuit needs monitored ground-fault protection and DCS reporting. Modbus reporting of heater current and ground-fault level lets maintenance be planned from the control room.

The ambient range to 60 C suits shaded outdoor mounting; confirm enclosure placement against solar load.

Information to send with an RFQ for the Raychem Elexant 4010i-SSR-FW Heat-Trace Controller

A heat-tracing controller is selected around the circuits it will manage, not only by its own data sheet. When you request a quotation for the Raychem Elexant 4010i-SSR-FW Heat-Trace Controller, tell us how many circuits it must control, the cable type and load current on each circuit, and whether control is by ambient or line sensing. List the sensor type you intend to use and the cable length back to the panel.

  • Supply voltage and the switching device required, mechanical relay or solid-state.
  • Alarm needs: low and high temperature, ground fault and loss of power.
  • Communication to the plant system, if any, and the protocol expected.
  • Installation location: control room panel, field mounted or hazardous area.

Sharing the existing heat-tracing design, or the line list it was based on, lets the controller set-up be checked before delivery and shortens commissioning on site.

About brand

Raychem is a brand of electric heat-tracing products. In 1972 Raychem patented self-regulating heating cable, whose output adjusts along its length to the surrounding temperature. The heat-tracing business passed from Raychem Corporation through Tyco, Pentair and nVent, and since January 2025 Raychem has been a brand of Chemelex, an independent company owned by Brookfield.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Raychem heating cables and controllers with the official datasheet attached to each product page, for oil and gas, petrochemical and building projects in Oman and the GCC.
