Raytec VAR2-XTR-i16-1 VARIO2 Extreme i16 IR Illuminator
Description
VAR2-XTR-i16-1 is the Raytec VARIO2 Extreme i16 infra-red illuminator: 48 LEDs at 850 nm for up to 500 m, in a housing rated IP67 and IK10 with extreme salinity, humidity and vibration protection and a -50 to +75 °C range.
The hardened VARIO2 for coastal and offshore-type exposure
VARIO2 Extreme keeps the optical performance of the VARIO2 range but adds an environmental package. The datasheet lists IP67, IK10 and increased protection against salinity, humidity and vibration, and widens the temperature range to -50 to +75 °C compared with +50 °C on the standard VARIO2 units. The Extreme family covers two sizes: the i8 (350 m) and this i16, which has the longest throw, 500 m.
Beam control uses the VARIO interchangeable lens system with a 10 degree circular lens, 35 x 10 and 60 x 25 degree elliptical lenses in the standard pack, and optional 80 x 30 and 120 x 50 degree lenses. Raytec says Hot-spot Reduction Technology delivers a diffused elliptical beam and prevents overexposure of foreground objects.
Key features as printed in the datasheet
- Power adjust from 20 to 100 percent and a built-in photocell with sensitivity adjustment and following output.
- Telemetry input and LED status indicator that can be switched off.
- Optional VARIO remote control for set-up from ground level: timer up to 30 minutes, remote dimming, factory restore and an optional PIN.
- Remote control can be disabled for improved security.

Extreme i16 versus standard VARIO2
Choose the Extreme version where the unit sees salt-laden air, high humidity, vibration or physical impact; the datasheet IK10 rating and the 75 °C upper limit are the main differences from a standard unit. The sister code VAR2-XTR-i8-1 has 24 LEDs and 350 m. Both Extreme models are 24 V AC/DC only; this datasheet lists no network version.
Accessories printed in the datasheet are the VAR-rc remote control (one remote can set up any VARIO2 illuminator), individual i16 lenses VAR-i16-LENS-8030 and VAR-i16-LENS-12050, and PSU-VAR2 power supplies (the datasheet configuration table shows how many i16 units each supports). Confirm wavelength and lenses before ordering.
Installation and set-up
The illuminator is fixed by its U bracket, and the datasheet states that a VUB wall or pole bracket is optional. Set-up of photocell level, power and timers is done with the optional VARIO remote control, so a remote should be ordered unless defaults are acceptable. Raytec publishes an installation guide for the Extreme family, document 1090-D-00001.
At 100 W per unit, cable size and voltage drop on a 24 V supply need checking on long runs. Position the light close to the camera, aligned to its field of view, because illumination distance depends on the angle chosen.
Applications in Oman and the GCC
The Extreme version is aimed at jetties, offshore-support yards, coastal desalination and power sites, causeways and rail or road sites with vibration, where salt fog and heat shorten the life of ordinary IR lights. The datasheet does not state hazardous-area certification for this product.
Selection and installation notes
An infra-red illuminator is selected from the camera, the distance and the width of the scene. Match the beam angle to the camera field of view, mount it close to the camera on a stable bracket, keep the lens clear of foliage and glass reflections, check the power supply voltage under load and set the light level in the dark, not in daylight. Camera and illuminator should be aimed together at commissioning.
Information needed for a quotation
Send the full model code, the quantity, the delivery location in Oman or the GCC, the intended use and any accessories needed, so that the complete package can be quoted together.
Documents and supply information
The manufacturer data sheet is attached to this page and should be read together with the project specification and the site risk assessment before a purchase is confirmed. Ratings, standards and dimensions are quoted as printed on that sheet. Lead time, stock position and certificates available with the shipment are confirmed in the quotation, and we supply to Oman and the wider GCC region for industrial, utility and building services projects.
