Basler Electric BE1-11g Generator Protection System

Description

One relay for complete generator protection, from distributed sets to large units

The Basler Electric BE1-11g is a digital generator protection system that Basler designed to address reliability issues arising from the complexity of programming. BESTspace files, preprogrammed BESTlogicPlus schemes and application notes let engineers start from a proven protection scheme instead of building one from scratch, and the BE1-11 family shares one stable firmware package.

Basler describes it as one relay for most applications, from large power generation and distributed generation to backup generation and intertie protection, combining differential, stator ground, loss of excitation and out-of-step protection with metering and communications.

BE1-11g protection and automation functions

  • Dual-slope differential protection with saturation detection algorithm
  • 100 percent stator ground protection to help prevent expensive rewinds
  • Loss of excitation and out-of-step (pole slip) protection; distance element backing up transmission faults
  • Choice of built-in sync-check or auto synchronizer; frequency tracking for backup and cogeneration
  • Device functions include 21, 24, 25, 27, 32, 40, 43, 46, 47, 50, 51, 59, 60, 62, 64G, 67, 78, 81, 86, 87 and 87N

The ordering code rows summarize the style chart in the bulletin; the printed chart and its footnotes govern, for example J case is required for dual phase current, differential options and the 10-input I/O choices.

Specifying a BE1-11g

Begin with the current transformer secondaries (1 A or 5 A) and whether a differential option is needed, because the current differential option requires dual phase current inputs and the J case. Then choose the power supply (24, 48/125 or 125/250 V), the I/O set, SEF or dual ground inputs, and the communication protocols. IEC 61850 is Ethernet protocol option 5 and needs RS-485 set to none. Send the CT ratios and protocol list and we will map them to the style code.

Installation and settings notes

Pick the case for the mounting method: H1 rack, H1 panel, or the vertical J case with plug-out and additional I/O. Basler lists an escutcheon plate for two dovetailed H1 systems, a 19 inch rack adapter bracket, a bracket with cutout for an ABB FT test switch, and a test terminal block kit for J case systems. Settings are entered through the free BESTCOMSPlus software, with error checking and summary screens.

Where the BE1-11g is used

Typical uses are protecting gensets in cogeneration, captive power and utility plants and backup generators. The bulletin does not print a temperature range for this relay, so check the instruction manual for environmental limits.

About brand

Basler Electric is an American maker of excitation, voltage regulation, generator control and protection products, founded in 1942 by Carl Basler in his father's garage in Highland, Illinois. Early work was rewinding and repairing electrical equipment, followed by custom transformers from 1945 and the SRA voltage regulator in 1959. Basler has plants in Highland, Taylor (Texas), Piedras Negras (Mexico) and Suzhou (China), and Littelfuse completed its acquisition of the company in December 2025.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Basler Electric regulators and controllers for generator owners, packagers and power plants in Oman and the GCC.
