A digital regulator for single-phase PMG brushless generators and DVR2000E replacement

The Basler Electric BE2000E is an environmentally rugged regulator that controls the output of brushless excited synchronous generators fitted with single-phase PMGs (permanent magnet generators). Basler presents it as an ideal replacement for the DVR regulator, and a plug-and-play replacement for Marathon Electric generators equipped with DVR2000E or DVR2000EC regulators, so retrofits are quick.

The microprocessor design gives four control modes, programmable stability settings and a rugged 3-amp PWM power stage, and it tolerates the harmonic distortion produced by nonlinear loads. A front-panel interface shows status and allows setting changes.

Is the BE2000E the right replacement?

Use the BE2000E where the generator is brushless and is excited by a single-phase PMG, and where the existing regulator is a Marathon DVR2000E or DVR2000EC; Basler describes it as a plug-and-play replacement for those sets. It is not a shunt-fed regulator: the operating input is single-phase 180 to 240 Vac at 120 to 300 Hz from the PMG. Check the field against 75 Vdc at 3.0 Adc and 18 ohm minimum. If the field demand is higher, consider the DECS-150 or DECS-250 listed in the datasheet.

Installation and setup notes

The unit mounts in a vertical, narrow format (135.6 x 274.8 mm). On first power-up use the front-panel adjustments or the BESTCOMS-BE2000E software over the rear RS-232 port. Pay attention to the PMG capacitor note in the datasheet (7.5 uF, 370 Vac across the terminals), the choice of single-phase or three-phase voltage sensing, and the crowbar and overexcitation shutdown functions during commissioning tests.

Where the BE2000E is used

Typical use is the retrofit of PMG-excited generators on diesel gensets in industrial, marine and utility service. It is useful for plants whose DVR regulators have failed and where a direct replacement avoids rewiring. The datasheet gives -40 C to 70 C operation and salt fog testing, but the unit still belongs in a protected panel or terminal box.

Installation and selection notes

Before replacing an existing regulator, record the old settings and compare the connections with the BE2000E wiring diagram. Set the control mode and stability on site, test at no load and under load and keep the settings file for later service. The PMG input must match the machine.
