Swagelok SS-1GF4 Toggle Valve, 1/4 in. Female NPT, 0.70 Cv
Description
The Swagelok SS-1GF4 is the high-flow member of the 1/4 in. toggle valve group. Its 1/4 in. female NPT ports take pipe nipples or male fittings, and its larger 0.250 in. (6.4 mm) orifice lifts the maximum Cv to 0.70, more than three times the 0.20 of the SS-1GS4 and SS-1GM4. That extra flow comes with a lower pressure rating of 200 psig (13.7 bar), so it is for utility air, water and vent services rather than high-pressure gas.

Bigger orifice, lower rating
The catalog groups the series by orifice: the 0.080 and 0.125 in. models are rated 300 psig, and the 0.250 in. models are rated 200 psig. The SS-1GF4 is in the second group. The larger seat area acts on more pressure and needs a stronger lever force, and the soft PTFE seat is rated accordingly. Use the valve where flow is more important than pressure, for instance a 1/4 in. instrument air header or a drain line.
The factory test for the series is nitrogen at 200 psig at the seat and seal with no detectable leakage using a liquid leak detector.
Female NPT ports
Female NPT ports let you thread male nipples or fittings into the valve, with the thread sealant going on the male part. Because the female thread is in the valve body, do not overtighten a mating fitting; support the body when you assemble it. The catalog lists the female NPT 1/4 in. toggle at 2.12 in. (53.8 mm) long, with the handle height of about 3.56 in. (90.4 mm) when open, which matters when the valve is panel mounted.

Choosing between the 1G options
SS-1GS4 and SS-1GM4 offer 0.20 Cv at 300 psig; SS-1GF4 offers 0.70 Cv at 200 psig. For 1/2 in. tube systems the same orifice appears in SS-1GS8. Brass versions replace SS with B in the code, and angle bodies add -A. Check the fluid, pressure and temperature before choosing: the valve is not for steam or hot oil above 200 F.

Swagelok is the American maker of tube fittings and small-bore valves, best known for its two-ferrule compression tube fitting. Fred A. Lennon and Cullen B. Crawford founded it in Cleveland, Ohio, in July 1947 as Crawford Fitting Company to make that fitting. Lennon bought the whole business and the patent in 1948, and the company has been based in Solon, Ohio, since the mid-1960s.

A Swagelok part number can be read directly. In SS-810-6, "SS" is 316 stainless steel, "810" means a 1/2 in. tube fitting (8 sixteenths of an inch, 10 series), and "-6" is a union. A suffix such as "-8" adds a 1/2 in. NPT end, and "M0" marks metric tube, as in SS-12M0-6 for 12 mm. Tube fittings must be made up the same way every time: finger-tight, then 1 1/4 turns for most sizes. A gap inspection gauge confirms the fitting has been pulled up.
