Banner QS18VP6LLP Polarized Retroreflective Laser Sensor
Description
Class 1 laser retroreflective sensing out to 10 m in an 18 mm barrel
The QS18VP6LLP is the PNP version of the QS18LLP polarized retroreflective laser sensor from Banner Engineering. A visible red 650 nm Class 1 laser projects a narrow beam, about 4 mm across at 10 m, so the sensor can see small objects and hold tight position control where a conventional LED retro sensor would let them slip through. A polarizing filter removes false returns from shiny packaging and metal surfaces.
The housing is the familiar QS18 right-angle body: it screws into an 18 mm threaded hole through the nose or bolts on from the side, and a 2 m four-wire PVC cable is fitted on the standard model. Two LEDs on top report power and light-sensed status, with a flashing amber condition when excess gain falls to between 1 and 1.5 times.

Where a laser retro sensor earns its place
Because the beam is narrow, the datasheet gives a minimum detectable object size against distance: 2.5 mm at 0.3 m, 5 mm at 1.5 m, 6.5 mm at 3 m, 10 mm at 6 m and 13 mm at 10 m, measured with a BRT-51X51BM reflector and about 10 times excess gain. That makes the sensor a fit for beam-break counting of small parts, wire and rod presence, and long-reach detection across a conveyor or doorway where there is no room for an emitter and receiver pair.
The same narrow beam makes alignment critical. Banner points out that one degree of misalignment moves the beam centre 100 mm at 6 m, so a swivel bracket such as the SMB18SF or SMB3018SC is worth specifying, and a temporary strip of retroreflective tape is the suggested aid for sighting the visible beam onto the target.
Ordering and variants
The base number is QS18VP6LLP for PNP; QS18VN6LLP is the NPN counterpart from the same datasheet. Adding Q8 gives an integral 4-pin M12 connector, Q5 a 150 mm cable with M12, Q7 an M8 connector and Q a 150 mm cable with M8. Models with a connector need a separate mating cordset. The 9 m cable variants marked W/30 are listed by the manufacturer as no longer available but are still covered by the document.

About brand
Banner Engineering is the American maker of industrial sensors, indicator lights, wireless monitoring and machine safety products. Bob Fayfield founded it in 1966 as a small engineering firm in the Minneapolis area. The company is privately held and still based in Minnesota.
Seven Star LLC lists Banner devices including the Q4X rugged stainless steel laser distance sensor and the K50 Pro Beacon IO-Link multicolor RGB indicator, and supplies Banner sensors and indicators to plants and machine builders in Oman.

Banner Q4X and K50 Pro
Banner offers the Q4X in four range versions, all starting at 25 mm: Q4X100 to 100 mm, Q4X300 to 300 mm, Q4X500 to 500 mm and Q4X600 to 600 mm. The series is available with discrete, analog and IO-Link outputs and has a display on the sensor. The K50 Pro Beacon is a status indicator whose color and behavior are set from the controller over IO-Link.

Ordering Banner products: what we need
Send the complete Banner model number from the device label, because range, output type and connector are all coded into it. For the Q4X, state the measuring distance, the output your PLC input needs and the connector or cable style. For indicators, give the housing size, control method and voltage. Mating cordsets and brackets can be included for GCC orders.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. The manufacturer warns that the sensor lacks the self-checking redundant circuitry needed for personnel safety applications and must not be used for that purpose.
A BRT-51X51BM retroreflector is recommended for beam-block applications up to 10 m and is included with the sensor, according to the datasheet.
The output polarity only. P is PNP (sourcing); N is NPN (sinking). Range, beam and housing are identical.
Append Q8 for an integral M12, Q5 for a 150 mm cable with M12, Q7 for an integral M8 or Q for a 150 mm cable with M8. A mating cordset is ordered separately.
Yes. It is a Class 1 laser product and the datasheet advises never staring into the lens and never using a mirror as a retroreflective target.
