Lovato RF383800 32-38 A Thermal Overload Relay

Description

An RF38-family overload relay set between 32 and 38 A

A motor needing overload protection in the 32-38 A band can use the RF383800, a thermal relay of the Lovato Electric RF38 family with phase-failure detection and a trip indicator.

Tripping class is 10A, the reset mode is manual or automatic, and the auxiliary contact block provides 1 NO and 1 NC for the control circuit. Insulation voltage is 690 V.

Matching the relay to the motor

Choose by current window first (32-38 A), then by trip class (10A) and reset mode, then check that the relay mounts to the contactor you plan to use.

Short-circuit protection is separate: the datasheet quotes 63 A gG and 40 A aM as maximum fuse sizes for this relay.

Application and wiring

The relay is intended to sit directly below a matching contactor for a compact direct-on-line starter, or to be mounted separately on a base. Wire the NC contact in the contactor coil circuit so that a trip drops the motor.

Connection is by screw and washer. Keep an eye on panel temperature, because ambient heating shifts the trip point of a thermal relay.

For panel design and commissioning, the practical figures to keep at hand are: terminals type screw and washer; terminals screw M4; terminals width 12.6 mm; terminals tool Phillips 2; auxiliary circuit type screw and washer; auxiliary circuit screw M3.5; auxiliary circuit width 8 mm; auxiliary circuit tool Phillips 2; operating temperature (min) -25 °C; operating temperature (max) 60 °C; storage temperature (min) -50 °C; storage temperature (max) 70 °C; max altitude 3000 m; operating position, normal Vertical plan. These come straight from the datasheet and are repeated here so that the key installation limits are visible without opening the PDF.

About brand

Lovato Electric is the Italian manufacturer of low-voltage electrical components for industrial automation and power distribution: contactors, motor protection circuit breakers, soft starters, variable speed drives, power factor controllers, transfer switch and generator controllers, and energy meters. It was founded in Bergamo in 1922 and has been run by the same family for four generations. Its headquarters is in Gorle, near Bergamo, and it celebrated its centenary in 2022.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Lovato motor control, drives and power management products, and supply them to panel builders, contractors and maintenance teams in Oman and the GCC by order code.

Lovato order codes describe the product. On a contactor such as BF0910A230, "BF09" is the frame and rated current (9 A in AC-3), "10" is the built-in auxiliary contact (one normally open), "A" means an AC coil and "230" is the coil voltage. The coil voltage must match the control circuit exactly, so it is the most common detail to check when replacing one. For motors, a soft starter limits the inrush current at start and stop, while a variable speed drive controls the speed continuously and saves energy on pumps and fans that do not need full flow all the time.

Where Lovato products are used

In Oman and the GCC, Lovato components are built into motor control centres, pump and HVAC panels, capacitor banks for power factor correction, generator and ATS panels, and machine control panels for industry, water and buildings.
