Normalab NPI 442 Gasoline Oxidation Stability Tester

Description

Induction period testing of finished gasoline

The NPI 442 is a Normalab dry-bath instrument that measures the oxidation stability of gasoline by the induction period method. A gasoline sample is placed in a pressure vessel, the vessel is charged with oxygen and heated, and the pressure is monitored until the sharp pressure drop that marks the end of the induction period. The induction period is read as an indication of the tendency of motor gasoline to form gum in storage.

Normalab lists ASTM D525, ASTM D873, IP 40, IP 138 and ISO 7536 and related methods. The scope applies to gasoline in finished form only, and Normalab’s leaflet notes that correlation with gum formation in storage may vary markedly under different storage conditions and with different gasolines. The unit is the dry bath version with four positions.

Delivery, accessories and options

The NPI 442 is delivered with four pressure sensors (P/N 40914). Normalab states that accessories and options must be ordered separately according to the application. The listed items are the stainless steel test cylinder with cover and glassware, equipped with a rupture disk (ref. 40903/1), the glass test vessel with lid (ref. 513513), the NPC 210 safety oxygen filling and decompression unit with protective screen (ref. 40930), a manual loading and decompression kit, a thermal printer with paper in packs of 10 reels, a 2-cylinder support, and a temperature calibration set for the test cylinder (dry bath only).

The NPC 210 is described as ready to connect to the ground, with a weight of 30 kg and dimensions of 500 x 365 x 800 mm. Pressure sensors are mounted on quick couplings, so loading and removing the cylinders is quicker than with fixed connections.

Selecting and preparing a gasoline stability test

Because the test uses pressurised oxygen at elevated temperature, plan the laboratory installation carefully: oxygen supply and regulator, an earthed loading and decompression station, ventilation, and rules for cleaning glassware. The gum solvent named in the leaflet is a toluene and acetone mixture, so solvent handling needs the usual precautions.

Before ordering, confirm the standard to be followed, how many stainless steel cylinders and glass vessels are needed for the number of positions, whether to buy the NPC 210 or the manual kit, a printer, the oxygen purity available locally and the 230 V supply. Related equipment is grouped under liquid analytical systems.

About brand

Normalab designs and manufactures laboratory test instruments and laboratory glassware for petroleum products at its site in Valliquerville, France. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Oman, lists Normalab spare parts: the 60606 circulation pump for the coolant circuit of the NDI 450 automatic distillation analyzer, and the 60448 thermal detection thermocouple. We source Normalab parts by their five-digit reference number.

Normalab instrument families

The manufacturer arranges its instruments by the property tested: flammability, volatility, viscosity, cold flow properties, cleanliness and purity, lubricants, and bitumen, wax and grease. Its glassware line supports the same tests. The methods referenced are ASTM, ISO and IP. Refinery and fuel quality laboratories in the GCC run these instruments daily, which is why the usual request is for a replacement part rather than a complete instrument.

Ordering Normalab parts: what we need

Send the Normalab reference number of the part, the instrument model and its serial number, and a photo of the instrument nameplate. Where the part is a sensor or pump, a photo of the old item with its connector helps the manufacturer confirm the version fitted to your serial number. If you need a complete instrument, name the test method and the products you test.
