Dodge Tigear-2 Worm Gear Reducer, Ventless Maintenance-Free

A maintenance-free worm gear reducer built to outlast the competition

The Dodge Tigear-2 is a sealed, ventless worm gear reducer. Tigear stands for Tough Industrial Gear, and Dodge calls Tigear-2 the toughest worm gearbox in the industry. The catalogue lists 16 case sizes with center distances of 1.33 to 4.75 inches, standard ratios of 5:1 to 60:1, solid or hollow output shafts, and quill, separate or three-piece-coupled inputs. Each unit is factory-filled with H1 food-grade synthetic lubricant for life, so there are no scheduled oil changes and no breather to service.

Dodge states that, on average, Tigear-2 delivers more torque than competitive same-sized models, which permits downsizing, and that the reducers share the footprint and most critical mounting dimensions of the original Tigear and many competitive models.

Size 20 ratings with separate input

Part numbers add a shaft position letter: L left, R right, LR left and right, H hollow and HA hollow with alternative bore. Reducers ship without a mounting base, and a bolt-on base kit 20BASE is ordered separately if required. The catalogue gives equivalent ratings for every size.

Why it is built this way

A proprietary worm manufacturing process gives a larger cross section and 20 to 30 percent more steel along the worm. Seal journals are plunge-ground to remove invisible lead, which keeps seals cool-running, and the output shaft has large tapered roller bearings to maximise overhung load ratings. In a comparative test of size 20 units against two competitors at 3.38 hp and 15:1, the catalogue reports that all Tigear-2 units completed 500 hours without measurable wear; one competitor failed on average at 174 hours. Testing then continued at 200 percent load for more than 3,000 hours. Those are Dodge’s own results.

E-Z Kleen and FoodSafe

E-Z Kleen is the corrosion-resistant washdown design; FoodSafe is a 300-series stainless steel solution offered in sizes 17 to 30 with a rounded housing that avoids harbor points. Both use the XT two-piece output seal with an axial lip, rubber-ID sleeve, axial bumper and stainless seal case, and both are IP69 rated. The catalogue says cleaning guidelines suggest limiting pressure to 200 psi and that Dodge tests at seven times that pressure. Confirm before ordering: center distance and ratio, input style and motor frame, solid or hollow output, ambient above 75 degF (derating), and washdown version.
