Miller Big Blue 400 Pro Diesel Engine-Driven Welder, 400 A

Description

A 400 A diesel welder generator for stick, TIG and wire on remote sites

The Miller Big Blue 400 Pro is a diesel engine-driven welder that combines a 400 A DC arc with 10 kW of continuous auxiliary power. It is built for work away from the grid: structural steelwork, plant maintenance, pipework, rental fleets and construction camps. One machine runs stick (SMAW), DC TIG with Lift-Arc starting, and MIG or flux-cored wire with a feeder, and it can gouge with 3/16 in carbons or feed an air plasma cutter.

Miller offers it with a Kubota V1505 or a Mitsubishi S4L2 four-cylinder low-speed diesel, both EPA Tier 4 Final compliant, and describes the engines as designed to run over 10,000 hours before the first basic overhaul. Miller also states that its engine drives are tested for high-temperature climates, up to 56.7 °C, which is the highest air temperature on the WMO extremes archive.

Arc control, ArcReach and wireless interface

Dynamic DIG arc control works on a time-based algorithm and lets the operator set puddle fluidity (arc control) and the drive of the arc (DIG range) separately, which helps with E6010 and low-hydrogen electrodes out of position. Lift-Arc starts the TIG arc without high frequency, and Auto-Stop and Auto-Crater end the weld without flare. A 14-pin receptacle with Auto-Remote Sense accepts remotes and feeders, and an industrial USB port loads software and saves machine log files.

ArcReach is an option that sends parameter changes over the weld cable, so a SuitCase or Smart Feeder or the ArcReach Stick/TIG Remote can adjust the machine at the joint with no control cord. Wireless interface control is a factory option on this model: from a hand-held remote the operator can start and stop the engine, change process, save up to four custom programs and view fuel level.

Ordering and what to confirm before ordering

Stock numbers printed by Miller: 907732 (Kubota, USA), 907733 (Mitsubishi, USA), the same two with ArcReach as 907732001 and 907733001, 907732013 (ArcReach with wireless interface control) and 951744 (ArcReach with highway trailer package). The international Big Blue 400X Pro is 907732010, or 907732011 with ArcReach. Accessories include the HWY-mid frame trailer 301438 with 1,424 lb capacity, a remote output panel kit 951850, a spark arrestor kit 300585 and a lockable flame arrestor fuel cap 043947.

Confirm the engine make, the plug and receptacle standard, whether the 60 Hz auxiliary rating of the USA model suits the site or an international 400X Pro is needed, and the feeder or plasma cutter to be run from it. See the Miller Big Blue 400 PipePro for the pipe-specific version, and browse all Engine-Driven Welders. Fuel, engine oil and spares for the diesel are not part of the welder warranty.

How the Miller Big Blue 400 Pro works

A diesel engine turns a generator. The generator feeds a welding circuit and a separate auxiliary power circuit. The operator sets the process and the current on the front panel, and the engine speed follows the load.

About brand

Blue welding machines from Appleton, USA, where Miller has built arc welding equipment since 1929, are a common sight in pipe shops and on construction sites. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Miller welding power sources, engine-driven welders, induction heating systems, MIG guns and auto-darkening helmets for fabricators and contractors in Oman, and checks each model and its input power configuration against the manufacturer's documentation before quoting.

Miller product families listed here

Miller welding machines on this page cover most processes used in plant construction and maintenance:

  • TIG and stick: Dynasty 400 AC/DC and Maxstar 210 STR
  • Multiprocess: XMT 400 ArcReach, XMT 650 and the PipeWorx 400 pipe welding system
  • Engine-driven welders: Trailblazer 330 and Big Blue 800 Duo Pro
  • Induction heating: ProHeat 35
  • Guns and helmets: XR-Aluma-Pro push-pull gun; T94, Classic, Digital Performance, Digital Elite and Digital Infinity helmets

Where Miller equipment is used

An XMT or PipeWorx set suits pipe spools and structural work where one power source must run stick, TIG, MIG and flux-cored procedures. Dynasty machines handle aluminum and stainless TIG. Trailblazer and Big Blue engine drives go where no mains supply exists, such as pipelines, tank erection and remote maintenance in the GCC. The ProHeat 35 is used for preheat and post-weld heat treatment of pipe joints.

Ordering Miller machines and parts: what we need

State the model and the Miller part number of the exact package, because the same machine is sold in several configurations. Give the supply at your site (voltage, phase and 50 Hz), the process and maximum current, and the accessories needed: wire feeder, remote control, cable length, torch or gun, cooler, running gear. For spare parts, the serial number from the rating label is essential, since Miller parts lists are issued by serial number range. For helmets, name the series and lens type.
