Overview

The Air Torque DRSC00300U is a mid-range pneumatic quarter-turn actuator in the Air Torque Edition 2010 rack and pinion family, here in the aluminium A-Version for general industrial plants. Air Torque rates the double acting DR build at 332 Nm with 6 bar supply, and the single acting SC build at 198 Nm with the spring at 90° and 126 Nm with the spring at 0°. That puts the Air Torque DRSC00300U in the bracket used for larger ball valves and for butterfly valves in the medium diameter range, where a compact rack and pinion unit is still preferred over a scotch yoke design.

Operating Principle

The Air Torque DRSC00300U converts linear piston movement into rotation through a rack and pinion gear set. Two pistons with integral racks sit on either side of the pinion. Pressurizing the centre chamber through port 2 pushes the pistons apart and turns the pinion through 90°; pressurizing the outer chambers through port 4 brings them together again. Because the lever arm of a pinion is constant, double acting output is essentially flat across the stroke, which is helpful for ball valves whose torque demand peaks at breakaway and again near the seat.

When the Air Torque DRSC00300U is ordered as SC, spring cartridges are installed in the outer chambers. Air at port 2 compresses them while turning the valve, and on loss of air the stored energy returns the valve to its fail position. Air Torque recommends sizing to the nameplate values at the actual supply pressure, and the operating manual notes that the number of springs is selected according to supply pressure. In practice, buyers should state the minimum available instrument air pressure, so that both the air stroke at that pressure and the spring stroke still exceed the valve torque with an adequate margin. The manual defines one service cycle as 90° open plus 90° close.

Engineering Design of the Air Torque DRSC00300U

For the Air Torque DRSC00300U, the valve interface is EN ISO 5211 F07/F10 with a 22 mm female square (DS22), and the G 1/4 inch air connections follow the NAMUR VDI/VDE 3845 pattern. The accessory attachment is AA2 for limit switch boxes and positioners. The housing is extruded aluminium finished with ALODUR anodizing, which Air Torque describes as wear resistant with lower surface roughness than conventional hard coat; the end caps are anodized and polyester coated in light grey RAL 9007. Mechanically, the Air Torque DRSC00300U pinion is supported by a top and bottom bearing and retained by a blowout-proof design, while each piston runs on three guides so that side loads do not reduce torque. Bearings are temperature resistant to 155 °C. A position indicator is fitted on top, and the stroke can be set externally by the OPEN and CLOSE stop screws. Standard rotation is clockwise to close. Every actuator is serially tested for tightness and torque before shipment, and the series is offered in standard, high temperature and low temperature seal sets.
