Keyence LR-ZB250CP LR-Z Series Self-Contained CMOS Laser Sensor

Description

Overview

The Keyence LR-ZB250CP is the rectangular, 250 mm, M8 connector model of the Keyence LR-Z series of self-contained CMOS laser sensors. Keyence describes the LR-Z as an all-purpose laser photo sensor that detects objects by position or by contrast, so it can reliably detect metal targets, dark targets, transparent targets and contrast changes. The sensor works purely on distance when required, which means detection does not depend on the shape, colour or surface finish of the target.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Keyence LR-ZB250CP to packaging lines, bottling and food plants, warehouses, fabrication shops and process skids in the Sultanate of Oman and across the GCC. Our engineers in Muscat help match the sensing range, output type and connector to the application and the existing wiring, and can propose the cable and mounting hardware needed for a complete installation.

Working Principle of the Keyence LR-ZB250CP

The Keyence LR-ZB250CP projects a Class 1 red laser spot (660 nm) onto the target and receives the reflected light on a CMOS image element. Because the position of the returning light on the element changes with distance, the sensor measures how far away the surface is, and the detection range for this model runs from 35 to 250 mm. The 3-digit display reads out a value that acts as a guide to the detecting distance, and Keyence specifies a standard detectable deviation of 9 mm between 35 and 180 mm and 25 mm between 180 and 250 mm.

The series adds Keyence’s U.C.D. function. The sensor first registers the distance to the background and the amount of received light as a reference. When a target enters the detection area, it switches if either the distance or the received light differs from that reference. This keeps detection stable with complex shapes, changing colour or surface condition, and thin objects with a small height difference. With background tuning the LR-Z can also detect transparent objects such as clear bottles or film, by watching for the change in received light from the registered background.

Engineering Design of the Keyence LR-ZB250CP

Keyence houses the Keyence LR-ZB250CP in a SUS316L stainless steel case with a PES display window, a PMMA lens cover with scratch-resistant coating, and FKM packing and connector ring. The rectangular body uses a 25.4 mm (1 inch) mounting pitch, weighs approximately 55 g and connects through an M8 4-pin connector. Keyence states that the durable design tolerates physical impact and even overtightening, and the enclosure is rated IP68 to IEC 60529, IP69K to DIN 40050-9 and NEMA 4X, 6P and 13, with resistance tests passed against cleaning agents from several manufacturers.

Setup is a simple one-touch teach. A 3-digit red 7-segment display shows the reading, and indicators show the output (yellow), DATUM (orange) and spot (green). The output is a PNP open collector rated for up to 30 VDC and 100 mA, selectable Light-ON or Dark-ON, with OFF, ON delay, OFF delay and one-shot timer functions. An external input supports calibration and laser emission stop, and the output is protected against reverse power connection, overcurrent, surge and reverse output connection.

Key Features of the Keyence LR-ZB250CP

The Keyence product pages highlight these characteristics of the Keyence LR-ZB250CP and the LR-Z series.

  • Distance-based laser detection from 35 to 250 mm, independent of target colour and finish.
  • U.C.D. function that compares both distance and received light against a registered background.
  • Background tuning for transparent targets such as clear containers and film.
  • Class 1 red laser (660 nm) with a spot of approximately 2.4 × 1.2 mm at 250 mm.
  • Selectable response time of 1.5 ms, 10 ms or 50 ms to balance speed against stability.
  • SUS316L stainless steel body rated IP68, IP69K and NEMA 4X, 6P and 13.
  • One-touch teach with a high-visibility 3-digit 7-segment display and status indicators.
  • Low power use of 450 mW or less on a 10 to 30 VDC supply.

Industrial Applications

The washdown-rated stainless body makes the Keyence LR-ZB250CP a strong fit for food, beverage and water bottling plants in Oman, where sensors face high-pressure cleaning and detergents: confirming the presence of caps, detecting clear PET bottles on a conveyor, and checking fill or carton position. In packaging, logistics and warehouse automation, distance-based detection helps with dark or glossy cartons and with metal parts that confuse ordinary diffuse photoelectric sensors.

In fabrication and maintenance workshops in Sohar, Duqm and Salalah, the oil-resistant metal body suits machine tools and assembly stations where coolant and spray are present. Seven Star LLC supplies the Keyence LR-ZB250CP with engineering support in Muscat. Where the target needs colour or contrast detection rather than distance, the Keyence LR-W500C full-spectrum sensor is an alternative, and for longer range measurement we also supply the ifm O1D100 laser distance sensor. Code reading on the same line can be handled by the Keyence SR-X100 code reader.

Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Keyence sensors and code readers for machine builders and maintenance teams in Oman and the GCC.

Keyence series listed

Three series appear on this page. The LR-Z is a self-contained CMOS laser sensor. Keyence describes it as detecting by distance and by received light, with one-button teaching, a stainless steel body rated IP68/69K and a range of up to 500 mm depending on the model; the LR-ZB250CP is the listed type. The LR-W500C is a full-spectrum reflective photoelectric sensor from the LR-W series. The SR-X100 is an autofocus 2D code reader.

Ordering Keyence sensors: what we need

Keyence type codes are short but exact. Send the complete model, such as LR-ZB250CP, because the letters at the end decide the output type and the connection. Remember that many Keyence sensors need a separately ordered cable or connector, and code readers need a cable, a power supply and often a mounting bracket. List those items, the cable length, and the communication interface your PLC uses.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can the Keyence LR-ZB250CP detect?
It detects targets by distance or contrast, so it handles metal, dark and transparent targets and contrast changes, within a detection range of 35 to 250 mm.
What is the U.C.D. function on the LR-Z series?
